I’ve enjoyed this show, mostly since it started, although I don’t watch it every week. One thing last night’s episode kind of pissed me off, although the ending of the show eased my feelings a bit.
Grace’s new boyfriend (Harry connick) sets up Will with a friend for a day trip. He’s a short guy, about 5’2", I’d say. Will isn’t happy. The guy’s good-looking, fit and rather aggressive. That’s the joke. Little dynamo hot for Will. Much laughter follows. Being a rather short fellow (5’6"), I didn’t laugh. Not once.
SPOILER alert!!!
At the end of the show Grace and Harry Connick connect and She’s happy, but Will is still unhappy from the trip, something bad happened to him that I didn’t see. But after Grace goes into her apartment the new guy “sneaks” into Will’s place, and Will looks all happy about it. So, he’s gotten over the short guy’s shortness, but he can’t tell Grace about it. He’s ashamed? Embarrassed? Still no laughter on my part.
Am I silly? Or did I miss something? I don’t think trying to make a joke out someone being short is funny, or a good idea, especially on Will & Grace.
Comments?
Mrs. H loves Will and Grace. I can barely stand it, lousy acting, one dimensional characters and cheesy, over the top, predcitable humor. That show uses every rehashed sitcom plot ever created including short people jokes. The usual take on this is a woman being ashamed of being with a guy who is gasp shorter than her.
DaddyTimesTwo, there was nothing more to this show than what you thought. Being 5’11" I can’t relate, I suppose, but if one is a short male and sensitive about it, I can see how one could be uncomfortable with that episode. Like you said, there is a bright side, the implication is that short men are the most virile.
Haj
Will falls off his bike and goes back to a lodge of some kind. The short guy stays behind to comfort him. Will’s being extremely grumpy and wonders why he even bothers. He says it’s because he thinks Will is “cute.” He starts to rub Will’s cold feet, and Will finds this wonderful.
I’m even shorter than you are, DTT so I wasn’t crazy about this joke either. I’m sure we’ll never see him again, but at least they ended the show on a more positive note.
I guess I agree, hajario, that Will & Grace isn’t the most original sitcom ever, but Karen and Jack make the show. Without those two, W&G would be a plain vanilla cancelled after one-half season long-forgotten show.
And I don’t think that I am that sensitive about my height, it’s just that the character was only “funny” because he was short. It’s same thing had he been black, Jewish, bald, fat or whatever and I think I would have had a similar reaction.
I think you’re being too sensitive about this one.
The point wasn’t that the guy was incredibly short (although Will did ask where the other half of his date was), it was that Will and Grace are so picky and always finding fault with everything. Leo (Harry Connick’s character) sets up what should be a fun weekend activity - going bike riding in the Catskills and pumpkin hunting. But, Will and Grace are hating it, it’s too cold, the bike seat is going up Grace’s ass, etc.
Grace decides to become New Grace and find something positive in everything. Will, who hits a pothole and falls off his bike, stays back at the lodge with the “date”, who rubs his feet.
So, really, I think Brad Pitt could’ve showed up as Will’s date and given his rotten attitude on that day, he probably would’ve found something wrong with Brad, too.
If you think Will and Grace are bad, have you check out that piece of garbage that’s on after it? Blech!
I agree with you on that trishdish. I refuse to watch that show (Good Morning, Miami), just because it looks ridiculously stupid. I’m thinking, hoping it won’t last long. And NBC is hyping the crap out of it.

The show has it’s moments. It perfectly characterizes (sp?) a past GF of mine, Peggy.
Peggy is the Blonde Grace.
(In the way she acts)
Needless to say, she LOVES the show.
I watch it, and I’m shaking my head the whole time.
