I didn’t see a thread on this yet, and it’s been on for 3 weeks, so maybe nobody’s watching. IMO, you’re not missing anything.
Granted, I’ve only seen about 2/3 of one episode, because I couldn’t even make it all the way through. Nothing but one forced, stilted, sit-commy cliché after another. Total dreck.
Why brink it back if you have nothing new to say? They must have dangled a big paycheck in front of the four principals.
that’s the thing they (the fans)don’t want anything new really except a "here they are 15 years later slightly more mature " character wise and how they react on how the gay lifestyle aspect (like legal marriage and acceptance) and the political landscape has changed since the first run
so if you didn’t like it the first time the second isn’t going to change your mind at all
the Gilmore girls reboot went through the same thing…
I just tried to watch today’s episode, Grandpa Jack. I got about halfway through but I couldn’t finish it.
They should kill off Debra Messing. Not her character, her. (OK, I don’t really mean that, but I wouldn’t mind never seeing her again). Everyone else is more or less ok and inoffensive, she is emotionally a stick. Whatever she did to make the original Grace tolerable is completely gone.
And these characters are supposed to have continued in exactly the same vein for another 15 years without anyone growing or changing or having a relationship? And Stanley is still alive? Good gravy, what’s the point of living?
Before the first new episode was over, I remembered why I had stopped watching the original series. Isn’t it possible to be funny without being infantile?
I’ve only seen the first and part of the second episode. Yes, it’s pretty much the same as it ever was but it was one of my favorites so though I can’t deny all the flaws that have been pointed out here, I still get a kick out of it.
Re Debra Messing, I feel like she changed when she was pregnant. I mentioned this here before; pregnancy did not suit her. She looked terrible (though of course she can’t help that) but her personality seemed to change too. I can understand if she didn’t feel well but it seemed liked her role was written bitchier or something. Whatever was going on, she totally lost her charm.
I was SO excited to see that it was coming back, and have been watching, but, something’s missing. I don’t understand how Stan’s still alive. I don’t understand how the finale of the original just… went away. I don’t understand how Jack can have a grandson that age, since it’s only been 10 years or so.
I do love how they are smacking Trump around; best part of the reboot. I’ll stick around and continue watching, but I miss the feel of the original.
Considering what goes for “comedy” these days on TV, I’ll take Will & Grace. Too many “comedy” shows these days are so contrived for a dumbed down audience. The writing just is not there. As an example, Tiny Fey was great on SNL. What she produces or sponsors on TV now is just shit.
I feel like if I were gay, I’d hate this show with a passion. Their “gay” humor is cliche and played out. More talented writers would be able to figure out new and creative ways to use gay humor. And maybe in the process rip on the homophobes to drive home the message: “If you’re still hating on the gays, this is what an idiot you look like.”
What a bunch of sour sad sacks! I loved the original series, and I’m loving the reboot, too. If anything, it’s funnier than the original. I’m laughing my head off all the way through it. Obviously YMMV.
We thought the first episode was terrible and almost didn’t bother watching any more. But the second episode was excellent so we are continuing to watch.
I wish it was just Will and Jack. Karen I WANT to love… she has some funny lines… but the quips just don’t hit like they used to. Grace is almost unbearable to watch. I cannot stand her. The continuous “Karen, stop being inappropriate” bit from Grace is sooo tired. Its been ten years…accept who she is!! I still think Jack is amazing. Hands down the best part of the show. Regardless of it all… i will continue to record and watch.
I’m gay, and Will & Grace is basically the equivalent of a gay minstrel show, but I like it anyway. Also I had a crush on Sean Hayes when I was a kid. :o I was really surprised at where they went with Elliot though. He has a gay father and a lesbian mother, yet was perfectly willing to send his son to a conversion therapy camp. I mean it’s good that he saw the error of his ways and stood up to his wife, but still. Also apparently they had to fly all the way to NYS to find a conversion therapy camp despite living in Texas. :dubious: His hair’s completely un forgivable thought.
I loved that. It had to be a deliberate homage to that episode of The Lucy Show where Lucy & Viv tried to install a shower in their sons’ room and got trapped in it.
I watched W&G for the first couple seasons then I had some sort of TV black hole in my life where I missed the rest.
I like the new series. I think it’s pretty much what I expected. I knew that it had a huge gay following (uh, duh JJ?) and that it had a “gay minstrel show” quality to it and that’s exactly what I was expecting. Everything seems like caricatures and it’s what I expect. Jokes may seem pretty lame but … no one else is saying them in weekday prime time broadcast TV I guess, so I appreciate it.
For some reason my mom texted me after the second episode and was like “New W&G not funny.” I had no idea that she watched it before (past the initial seasons like I did) or that she liked it and was watching the new series expecting to like it. And I have no idea how she manages to watch it without my homophobe dad crying in the background. But she did and she didn’t like it. To that I say shrug
