Will Lady Gaga be "relevant" a year from now?

Man, how far the bar has dropped in less than 15 years. Her music is good? Man, I feel sorry for the musical simpletons who claim that… her music sucks.

 Charming

It’s not surprising that there are so many haters here. As far as I can tell, most of the SDMB listens to crappy indie rock (don’t believe the hype Decemberists, you’re terrible).

Why would you think she’s going anywhere? She’s more talented than Brittany Spears, and Christina Agulara and they keep putting out shitty dance pop tunes for the past decade.

Now if Katy Perry would just go away.

Hey, I say, Rage against the machine, that corporate conglomerate whore of a pop syphilitic. She was more talented as a Penist, singer- slick production and fashion investment can’t make up for lack of talent.

Lady Gaga has taken the work done by the pop queens of the past - most clearly Madonna, Christina Aguilara, and Beyonce - and turned them up to 11. She puts the art into pop art.

She’s really exciting and interesting, and I sure hope she doesn’t burn out and fade away.

I hope Gaga’s next tour has shirts touting her as a penist. It just seems like something she’d do (at the tour I went to, there were shirts that said “LADY GAYGAY” because that’s what the Phelps’ labeled her).

Oh, and I should say in regards to the rabid fans point: it’s true, but that’s because this woman puts on some EPIC shows- seriously. Even people I know who were meh about her before the show quickly became “Little Monsters” I’ve seen Madonna, I’ve seen Britney, I’ve seen Christina, and Gaga’s show was leaps and bounds above the other pop stars. Now, in fairness, I saw Madonna during the Ray of Light era, which certainly wasn’t her best. I’ll concede that :). That said, Gaga actually sings, dances, puts on a production, plays the FUCK out of a piano, tells a story, and wears some epic clothes in the process. Most of all though: she loves it. So many of the pop stars seem just. . . jaded, dead inside, whatever you want. You can just tell that even though it’s just pop music, Gaga believes in what she’s doing and is clearly appreciating every moment of it. And hey, what can I say? It’s a nice thing. I’m more than happy to share some videos of the concert I was at, if you’d like to see what I see.

Oh, she’ll burn up and fade out as sure as next season’s fashions and this year’s seasons. Whether it’s sooner than later is the only point of contention. She’s just another 60’s surrealist.

Now get off my lawn with that big, flamboyant penist!!!

Right, she’ll just reinvent herself to do whatever it is she wants to do, and I’ll even guess that it may be in directions that are not popular, but artistically interesting to her.

The OP would make sense if Amy Winehouse were the subject. Gaga is nowhere near as self destructive (if she is at all) - she’ll be around a while.

I know The Fame Monster is pretty short, but I she considers it a full album. Wikepedia says that her record company wanted to put out a special edition of The Fame and she told them to fuck off, more or less, and made it a standalone album. So she’s had two albums.

I still think her whole career is building to a long run as an uncostumed Stefani Germanotta and I think if she times it right, she could have a long run in that “persona” and remain relevant for decades.

Wow ! What a subversive rebel !

That’s another thing, I’m glad she’s using her fame to help LBGT causes, but being “pro-gay” isn’t some career killer move anymore. If anything, it’s almost the default as performers work with a lot of support people who are gay. It’s hard to hate an entire group of people when you work with them everyday and they’re not actively trying to “convert” little kids to their sinful ways.

So, what’s wrong with her lending her fame to a good cause? I’m not suggesting she’s being unique or new in her exchanges, but I find it admirable any time any person stands up for what’s right and brings more attention to it. Whether you’re Jim Bob on the street or Lady Gaga, you should always be applauded for doing what’s right— even if it’s not as difficult as it was 15 years ago.

Yes, that is one of the many things I like about her. From her Wikipedia article:

Nothing’s wrong with it. Like I said, I’m glad she does it. But she does act she’s being subversive by supporting gay causes and the media buys into it. All I’m saying is that it’s not unusual to be “pro-gay” any more. And I think she should know that working in a gay-friendly industry like the music industry.

She does?

Sheesh. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I think the issue is less that Lady Gaga herself believes she’s being subversive - it’s that her diehard fans and the media have latched onto that and make everything she does “subversive” and “rebellious” and “an artistic statement”. She is a very smart lady, and realises this, and milks it for all it’s worth.

Sometimes I have issues with the way she goes about things (yet as I said before I adore her music), but I have to give credit to her for being a master manipulator. She will play the media to her advantage for as long as humanly possible. See also: Madonna.

There seems to be a bit of “The Man is telling me I can’t do this, so I’m doing it anyway!” Except, The Man in the music business very likely just celebrated his 25th anniversary with his male partner.

Haven’t read all the replies so someone else may have gotten to this already:

In general, regarding pop artists:
First album (or first big hit album): garners fans and acclaim
Second album: more of the same, some experimenting but nothing too radical
Third album: the “do you love me” album where the artist dips into the weird stuff, changes genres, et cetera. Fans will (probably) love it while some absolutely hate it, critics will have divided opinions.

Now with Gaga, do you consider The Fame/The Fame Monster to be one album or two? You could look at it either way. So she’s either got one more guaranteed hit album waiting (if you count Fame/Monster as one) or she’s about to branch out into new territory. In either case, she’ll be around at least until that next album is played out.

Well, what can I expect from the generation of the forever imprinted Lyrics, “Baby, Baby- Baby… Oh.”? Bieber mullets and gaga gothic is a poor substitute.
