Will Marco Rubio run for reelection to the senate?

There is a movement to try to convince Rubio to run for his current senate seat. Rubio himself seems to be considering it. What do you all think, will he or won’t he? The deadline to declare is June 24th, so he has 1 week to decide.

He will and he’ll lose.

I understand Empty Suit is polling higher.

Supposedly the guy running for the seat now is a personal friend of Rubio’s. Tough to make “I asked my friend to step aside for me because I failed at running for President” into a stirring campaign theme.

Yes, but only if Trump doesn’t ask him to the prom.

Yes, it is odd that so much of the pundit class portray his running as making the seat so likely to stay GOP.

Recent PPP poll.

And assuming he loses the seat too, then he really won’t be able to win dog catcher. That would eliminate any future career rebound chance.

So, he either loses and becomes even more of a laughingstock, or he wins six years at a job he hates.

Or, he retires to “jobs” with lobbying and consulting firms, spends six days a week doing whatever he wants and getting paid a lot to do it, and leaves what’s left of his name intact to do something else (governor, whatever) one day.

It would be awesome if Murphy showed up for a debate in a Chris Christie mask. Hope one of the questions would be “Hey Marco, do you think Obama knows what he’s doing?”

Seriously, he despises the Senate and only ran so he could run for president. Why in tarnation would he run again?

If Marco has any intelligence at all (a questionable premise), he’ll spend the next year or so “out” of politics rehabilitating his image (charitable works, unofficial ambassador to a newly opened Cuba in the ‘only Nixon could go to China’ sense, lots of Churchy stuff) and then run as Voldemort’s replacement. A term and a half as Governor and he MIGHT be able to try again for POTUS in 2024.

Surely Murphy will run an exclusively positive campaign … but boy the temptation to have commercials consisting almost entirely of Rubio endorsing Trump coupled with Trump’s insults of Rubio, and of Rubio’s insults of Trump … with the sparse comment at the end of “What does Marco Rubio actually believe? We deserve better.” … will be hard to resist.

From this New York Times article.

Seems to me like the quandary little Marco is facing is [ul]
stay out and risk obscurity [/ul]***or ***[ul]get in the race and risk a career ending defeat
[/ul]

I have to admit his situation has me grinning from ear to ear.

Predictit puts the odds of Rubio running at 81%. I think he’s more likely to run than not, but I think 81% might be a bit high.

I don’t think he should, personally, first because it’s a dick move. He quit his job to run for President and now he wants it back? Second, because if he actually wants to become President, he should run to succeed Rick Scott as governor in 2018. Then he serves two terms and runs for President whenever there’s an opening after 2024. He came off as unready. More Senate time isn’t going to make him ready, he needs to actually govern. Plus he needs to get out of DC. The DC Republicans are way too dysfunctional for remaining there to benefit him.

From what I’ve read in FL papers, Marco stepped on a lot if the wrong toes and burned the wrong bridges in his quest to shoot up to Top Dog even before getting into digital biometrics in the primary; he may be in a situation of having to start all over from worse than bottom if he’s stuck with a “loser twice the same year” label come January. His best hope may be to find himself some conservative PAC/consulting firm/media outlet that’ll pick him up when he’s down, and work to heal the bbruises and let things cool off so he can start rebuilding for a later comeback.

Polls show him trailing Murphy by 2. That might as well be a 10 point deficit given the relative name recognition of the two men.

Kinda funny watching someone try to retreat across the bridge they just finished burning. Aside from categorically saying he wasn’t going to run again, he also made a big deal of how much he hated being in the Senate and got a friend to run in his place who he now will have to very publically stab in the back to get the nomination back. He’s really made this a lot harder for himself than it had to be.

Not sure why he made such a big deal out of not running. Surely even if he was overly optimistic, he must’ve known there was some chance he would lose the Pres nomination. Its not like his deciding he wanted to stay in the Senate was some unforeseeable turn of events.

Agree that’d be the best course. But it seems most profiles of Rubio describe him as a “young man in a hurry”, so it seems likely he doesn’t want to wait until 2020 or 2024 to make another go at the President.

On the other hand, even if he runs for the Senate, it seems plausible he’ll still be unemployed in 2018, so maybe he’ll be forced to try your strategy whether he likes it or not. Plus then he can get yet another go around with poor Charlie Crist.

Yes, he’ll run. The news about how he’s considering it due to pressure from the GOP are obvious precursor to the coming tale about how he’s decided, if only for the good of the party, to try to regain his senate seat. If he hadn’t already made up his mind to run, you wouldn’t see the stories about how he’s now considering it.

I hope he runs so I can vote against him.

WaPo: Marco Rubio will seek Senate reelection, reversing pledge not to run

Such bullshit. His reversal here shows that he is a man of absolutely no conviction or character. I hope he goes down in flames against Murphy.

A dick move. He has no interest in actually being a Senator, he just wants to keep his name alive for the inevitable 2020 presidential run.
