Will opposition to Iraqi intervention help Gerhard Schroeder's get re-elected?

German Chancellor Schroeder has dismissed intervention as an “adventure.” The immoderation of his remarks has even managed to provoke a warning from the U.S. Ambassador in Berlin about their effect on German-American relations. Link

On the one hand, a substantial majority of Germans opposes military intervention in Iraq, so his position might be a promoter of Schroeder voters.

OTOH the timing is unfortunate for him, since the campaign to garner support for action against Iraq is heating up now, near election day.

So, which is it? Will Schroeder be helped or hurt by his stance?
