Will science destroy us all

http://www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire062003.asp

How could anyone destroy space-time? Are any the fears in the article reasonable?

We already had a thread on this book ; the concensus was that humamity is unlikely to wipe itself ot, although I am pretty sure an unknown number of very bad things might happen.
The notion of vacuum decay is real. It was explored by Sir Martin Rees and Piet Hut in ‘How Stable is Our Vacuum’, Nature, vol302 p.508, 1983.

Sure. You just need an Oblitermerator.

The answer is yes, unless it’s no.

More like the answer is no,until its yes.

Unless yes means no and no means yes.

But it doesnt.Exactly.I need a towel.

I’m not worried. I figure it will be the problem of the robots (cf. The Terminator, the Borg, The Matrix, and the Replicants (from Stargate).

Peace

Warning, Will Robinson! I will assimilate you!

Science will only destroy us all if it is wielded by religious fanatics.

YOU FOOLS! You all laughed at my theories! BUT I’LL SHOW YOU ALL! My Doomsday Device shall make me the most feared man on Earth! YOU WILL BOW BEFORE ME! YOU SHALL ADDRESS ME AS OVERLORD! YOU WILL JUMP WHEN I CALL, AND CRY OUT MY NAME IN YOUR SLEEP!!!BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!

Bosda, I already cry out your name in my sleep. Will you be lenient towards me for this loyalty, O Supreme Overlord?

No, but I am impressed by your talent for groveling.

If you are qualfied, I might consider you Labratory Assistant caliber. Tell me…are you a hunchback?:stuck_out_tongue:

Having recently taken a position with Hark Corporation, I can assure you that there are no plans for science to destroy us all.

Whether science will destroy you all has not yet been determined.

I’m not worried, precisely because we have so many works like Terminator et al. to show us what not to do.

Of COURSE there are no plans to destroy us all. No one’s gotten that far yet. We’re still in the process of discovering WHAT could destroy us all. THEN it’ll be time for plans, assuming we survive the experiments that answer the question. My favorite scenario is an artificial black hole that somehow gets out of control.
