Will Scottish independence have an effect on the state flag of Hawaii?

The Union Jack features prominently on the flag of the state of Hawaii. What happens if the Scottish people decide to secede from the United Kingdom next Thursday and there maybe is a redesign of the British flag?

The Union Jack on Hawaii’s flag represents their historical association with the British Empire. Since it is there for historical reasons and not current reasons (Hawaii is not currently a British territory) there’s no reason for them to change it.

The chances of a change in British flag are slim enough as it is.

The reason for creating it in the first place would still be valid anyways. It was created (sans St. Patrick’s Cross) to signify the personal union under James VI and I.

King James was an ardent unionist. As far as he was concerned, union occurred in 1603 and the parliaments merely needed to recognize that God himself had decided* that Great Britain should be one kingdom. In his proclamation creating the flag, he even referred to the “Kingdome of Great Britaine,” which was divided into “South Britaine” and “North Britaine.”

*“What God hath conjoined let no man separate. I am the husband and the whole isle is my lawful wife; I am the head and it is my body; I am the shepherd and it is my flock. I hope therefore that no man will think that I, a Christian King under the Gospel, should be a polygamist and husband to two wives; that I being the head should have a divided or monstrous body or that being the shepherd to so fair a flock should have my flock parted in two.”

Aye, there’s no chance of a change of flag. Think of all the Mini Coopers that’ll have to get the roof repainted for a start.

Let’s rename the state Zippy’s, since there’s an even stronger historical association with spam & eggs with rice.

I’m just looking forward to when they rename the United Kingdom to fUK.
