Will SD ever add a "Like" Button?

You guys really oughta revamp the SD Board bringing into the 21st century. With a little creative thought, adding Like buttons and even more creative features… BAM! You can kick this Board up a Notch!

This is not something in the software we’re using at the present time.

But even if it was, I’m not sure we’d want to go that way. It’s always been about what you have to SAY at the Straight Dope. It needs to be more than just “I like” or “Me too.” We want your words.

One board I am on added up and down arrow buttons, then took away the down arrows, primarily to reduce “+1” posts. SDMB has very few of those, most people have some kind of contribution, paltry as it may be.

And, new and shiny does not always mean better.

Like.

If on the other hand posters contribute a little creative thought…Bam! The board can only get better.

But this is precisely why I wish (every once in a while) that there were a “Like” button: Occasionally I really like what someone has said, enough that I feel like expressing my appreciation, but I don’t want to post a contentless post consisting of nothing more than “Good one” or “+1” or “QFT” or “LOL” or “:).”

I have nothing to say in response to this OP that would not get me a warning.

-1… No, -1000!

From my experience on other boards I approve of “like” buttons, but not “dislike” buttons. Like buttons cut down on “me too” posts and let people express support for an opinion without cluttering the board. “Dislike” buttons tend to be used as ways of smearing unpopular posters regardless of what they are posting and without presenting an argument.

What, this question again? Has it been three months already?

I want them to add a button that is just a +/- 0. You don’t really agree, don’t really disagree. You don’t even really care.

I’d push that button for this thread.

Let’s hope not.

Yep.

I suppose a “Fuck You” button would also be out of the question. But that one I might actually get behind.

Or perhaps a “get bent!” button?

Why?

Some of us prefer to concentrate on the actual content of the posts rather than the window-dressing. I vote -1 to your proposal.

“Smearing”? You gotta be pretty sensitive to consider yourself smeared by a simple “dislike”. I wonder if the same people would consider a “like” as evidence that you are the coolest person in the whole world?

Obviously neither is correct… what those buttons would be, for me anyway, is a way to get a quick list of names of those who either associate with the post or otherwise. That can be worthwhile info too.

I agree. Also, every poll should be yes/no but allow only “yes” votes to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings.

Here’s a shiny trophy for that excellent post. (Only one, please, so we have enough to go around.)

Bet I know someone who would use that!

I have seen used a “thank you” button for showing appreciation for an informative post. The was also count of how many thanks a poster would receive. The spam bots invaded that feature and every post had multiple thanks. That button has been removed.

You made me laugh.

Seriously, I think the “like” button on Facebook is just a lazy way for people to acknowledge they have read a post but don’t have enough interest to formulate a response. It is just a bludgers response.
