Will Star Trek X be any good?

I really enjoyed Insurrection. And I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this next movie.

This raises a question. If the original series- for all of it’s laughably overacted scenes by Shatner- was able to attract some of the finest Sci-Fi writers on the planet, then why is it that we have to suffer through ANYTHING sub-par??

At this point, the Star Trek universe is so incredibly rich with back, front and side story that a truly inventive writer could have a field day, and get more out of 120 minutes than we could imagine.

Perhaps it was the idea ( back then ) that if you were a Harlan Ellison or a Theodore Sturgeon, that you were helping to create a new lexicon. Perhaps now the finer writers would look at the opportunity to write a story adaptable for a film script as simply a recycling job. Personally, I think that’s a shame.

There are always new ideas, and new treatments on old themes. Why haven’t today’s finest Sci-Fi writers come up with a truly staggering Star Trek script?

I have a crazy idea. Why not get some of todays top fiction authors to write Star Trek movie? Orson Scott Card, Sir Arthur C. Clark, Stephan King, Tom Clancy, or just pick anyone. OSC and Sir ACC are obvious. I like Stephan King’s horror, but leave the tedious techno stuff to Tom Clancy. That’s about his limit. I read two chapters of a Clancy book and was very unimpressed, so he could be left out.

We might actually end up with a good movie if they could write a script that’s half decent.
