Will the country unravel if Obama is assassinated?

Assassination of US presidents. Have the Brits made a new fictional documentary or something?

There are plans underway to ensure that, if Obama is assassinated, that the blame falls on Cow and Chicken. Oh, it will obviously be a frame up…but it will be a frame up that is necessary to protect the real killers That would be whale and dolphin, but please don’t tell the Japanese…

It will be interesting to see what the left (especially the vegan and animal rights factions) wing does with the knowledge. Will they follow the path of the Japanese and viciously attack Cow and Chicken where ever they find them? Or will they take a more reflective, more conciliatory stance, try and understand the motives of Cow and Chicken? It could be a blood bath, or it could bring the country together, with a sense of shared grief…and a really kicking picnic with hamburgers and fried chicken all around. Perhaps we could also implicate Pig…what’s a cookout without hot dogs???

I would have to think hard about staying in this country. Wife’s unemployed, I’ve got a shit job. It would crush my opinion and enthuiasm for staying here. Particularly if a large vocal minority cheered it on. I’d be so disgusted, I’d even consider Canada.

Nobody would have cheered if Bush had been killed, or at least those that did would only have cheered until the words “President Cheney” had sunk in.

The SDMB would have. They still will when Bush dies.

OK, then please cite the officers of the Republican party who are calling for Obama to be killed.

You’ve made a (ridiculous, hateful and moronic) assertion. Back it up.

Regards,
Shodan

To which I say once again:

I’m not even sure that a death now would inspire many cheers - by the end Bush Jr was seen more as a figure worthy of pity rather than hatred, a man who had been used by others and lost his chance to leave a decent legacy.

Now, I’ll grant you there’ll be some threads planning boneyard line dancing parties when Cheney dies (which can’t be more than a few years off, given his state of health). But then I’m somehow doubting that the right-wing will be all sweetness and light when Bill Clinton pops his clogs either (or Hillary , for that matter).

I am almost 100% certain that Hilary would assume the Vice Presidency in the event of Biden’s ascension to the top seat.

No offense intended towards Kos/Research2000, but do you happen to know if any other poll, perhaps by a different organization, confirms that finding?

For example, here’s a poll (PDF) by “Public Policy Polling.” I don’t know what their affiliation is, but one result they highlight is that six percent of those surveyed correctly believe that Obama was born in Hawaii, but did not understand that Hawaii was part of the United States. So those six percent presumably would have answered “No,” to the question about Obama being born in the United States. They are obviously idiots, but not “birthers” as the term is generally understood.

And looking at the crosstab table on page 18, it seems that Democrats and Republicans in equal percentage were confused about Hawaii.

Nor do their numbers seem to agree with the poll you cited on the question of Obama’s birthplace.

Maybe, though I’d think there’d be a lot of pressure to pick an African American, especially if the assassination was racially motivated.

FWIW, 20th century Presidents faced with VP vacancies seem rather loath to draw from their cabinets (Truman, Johnson and Nixion all pulled from the Congressional leadership, Ford the governor of NY). Might be a desire not to further shake up the leadership structure after the loss of a President (or in Nixons case, VP). Or it could be coincidence

Assume the Vice Presidency? No one assumes that role, as per the 25th amendment:

Or are you saying you think she’d be nominated? I suspect she wouldn’t, she’s too polarizing and this would be a time of crisis.

sigh More bullshit false equivalency . . .

Nominated. I think during a time of crisis is the best time to stick somebody polarizing in there. You can push through whatever you want using the sympathy vote.

See the PATRIOT Act after 9/11, etc.

Not really. Just showing that there are kooks on both sides.

I think she would - she had a lot of popular support during the primaries and she’s the Secretary of State, which is a sensible place to look for a replacement. Much better her than (gag) Pelosi or Reid.

Plus, her opponents are hardly likely to start a(nother) hate campaign immediately after a Presidential assassination. They’ll wait until a reasonable time has passed (by which point she’d be in office) and then start one. And then the Democrats will be all “hey, this is what inspired the last shooting” and the Republicans will be all “the Dems are using this crisis to push through whatever they want” and pretty soon we’re seeing the violence inherent in the system.

Who said the government would be on your side?
These kinds of snide remarks really irk me at times. For you to be here “fighting ignorance” is laughable. If anything you should be taking notes.

As to the OP, we wouldn’t be any worse than we are now.

One would assume that a civil war between the far right and the Democrat-controlled government would necessitate the government being on the side of… itself.

If Obama were assassinated, Joe Biden would be president.

As much as the Radical Right thinks Obama is a socialist, they fear Joe Biden is a loony socialist.

The country would mourn, there’d be a hiccup in the recovery from a few low weeks of consumer spending. Then, all the “socialist” democratic plans would breeze through congress in honor/memory of our martyred president. Joe Biden would be re-elected in 2012 on the platform that he’ll continue Obama’s plan of change and then set forth his own, slightly loony, plan.

White House Press Secretary Replaced With Actual Cheerleader!

Duh. Why else would she have Obama assassinated? And poor Joe wasn’t looking well at his swearing-in; can’t imagine he’s long for this world…

Of course there are. But it is false equivalency to suggest the kooks are of equal importance – or, for that matter, of equal kookiness – on both sides. It’s much, much worse on the right.
