You quote wikipedia citing Guttmacher survey performed in 1987 on post 16 week terminations, you know early second trimester (for which you’ve been called out before, so you know these are not accurate late term statistics) Nice try, indeed. Fascinating. Why not just go to Guttmacher yourself? According to Guttmacher post 21 week (date from last menstrual period) terminations are about 1.5% of total abortions.
What we’re debating here is the relative popularity of moving the limit to 20 weeks, the point at which fetuses feel pain. I say that’s a popular measure.
Except most late term bans are not for health reasons. When you read the reasonswhy most major medical associations are opposed to 20 week restrictions it is because they do not include adequate health protections for the mother or fetal abnormality. In fact, many late term bans have tried to include language that allows physicians to LIE to their patients about fetal prognosis. Rick Santorum would like to ban fetal genetic testing all together since (shockingly:rolleyes:) it leads to more 20+ week terminations.
There is no evidence of fetal pain perception at 20 weeks. This is a myth propagated by the anti-choice, anti-science crowd, by either using junk science or misleading fetal gestation dating, like post fertilization when the most common method used by OB/GYN’s is date of last menstrual period (LMP).
Are you talking about the 20-week ban? Since when is half-way through something “late”. I guess if you’re a man over 35 you’re in late-stage life? How can you tell who supports what when the GOP constantly creates catchy little inaccurate and/or misleading labels?
Well I wouldn’t. The fetus is not viable at 20 weeks. Call it what it is, a mid-term abortion ban. Then see what people think of it. If you can’t start from honest terminology, then maybe there’s something wrong with your position. If you can and the majority still support it, then maybe you’ll have something (although I would personally disagree as I don’t think freedoms should be subject to simple popular vote). Until then though, you’re using misleading terminology. Would you refer to the middle of the 4th inning as late in a baseball game or would you call it the middle of the game?
What the Hell else have they been doing? It’s all abortion almost all of the time with that party lately, with a little homophobia, xenophobia, and racism sprinkled in.
I chortle when I hear Republicans, even on this board, say “It’s not the GOP that keeps bringing up abortion.” Are they kidding me? How many pieces of abortion legislation have been drafted since the 2010 midterms?
Funny that, eh? They pretty much all campaigned on the deficit and jobs during the midterms, and then, once elected, got collective amnesia. I don’t think I have seen so much abortion legislation in my entire lifetime* than has been drafted in the last 3 years.
ETA: *That’s hyperbole to mean ‘a lot’ for professional pedants like **Bricker **.
I’ve always wondered how this works. When Democrats win, it means they have a mandate to do whatever the hell they want. When Republicans win, it means they can only do those things Democrats like.
