Will the Republicans keep beating the abortion drum after this year's election?

Oh?

I just love the, “Why are you all so focused on abortion? Yeah, our side wants to make it illegal for everyone but gosh, that’s no reason to act like it’s important.”

It seems Republicans want to say you can vote FOR them because of their stance on abortion, but if you vote AGAINST the because of their stance, why, that’s just unfair.

So, you didn’t read any of what I said then, right? Cool.

You know how ironic this thread is, right?

No. Why don’t you tell us.

That was Romney 2.6.4

I think you’ll find that Romney 3.4.1 said something quite different.

Did you happen to know political parties are a combination of voting blocs and single issue voters? No? Didn’t think so. I’m glad you guys and gals have extrapolated from “vote Democrat” to “agree with the Democratic party on issue X”. Luckily, it doesn’t work like that. Indeed, you guys and gals don’t even accept this assumption when we’re talking about the Republican party.

But, anyway, back to my original statement. Ironic thread is ironic.

Ok then. Tell us that you think abortion is ok and that you would support no restrictions on it if the GOP changed its stance to that in order to appeal to more voters

No, ridiculous post is ridiculous.

Here is how things seem to be in your head:

Republicans get voted in at the state level and in Congress in 2010 in massive levels. This results is an assault on reproductive choice unheard of and unseen since the time before Roe vs. Wade. Literally hundreds of laws are passed of all kinds!

Waiting periods: Check.
Mandatory unnecessary and often invasive medical tests: Check.
TRAP Laws aimed only at abortion providers: Check.

Even Congress gets in on the act as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate cosponsors dozens of bills that will restrict women access to abortions.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood is attacked repeatedly and made the pariah in this game… The Presidential candidate for the GOP wants them defunded entirely. Congress threatened to shut down the government if Planned Parenthood wasn’t defunded.

So… 2012 rolls around.

Democrats say “look at what Republicans are doing to your reproductive rights.”
The media asks Republicans what they think about reproductive rights.

And THAT is why in your mind Democrats are the ones beating the drum? Really?

I realize that the party of personal responsibility really HATES to be held responsible for their positions… Especially when it leads to saying stupid and offensive things in order to justify their stupid and offensive positions. But make no mistake: It’s their positions here.

When Republicans get elected, abortion rights are attacked. Unless you have some kind of list of how in all the blue states, they are all jamming mandatory abortion laws down the throats of everyone, then your point sucks.

So your argument is that Republicans were beating the abortion drum in 2012, even when they didn’t, because they passed abortion restrictions in 2010? That’s… Interesting. Wrong, but interesting.

Now that you’ve gotten your diatribe in, you’re free to actually respond to the content of my previous post.

Nope, in 2012 the laws passed or voted by them are still in the books and the record, with more to come. Unless you can show me any Republican that repudiated those restrictions passed in 2010 and before the current election, it is you who is wrong.

So, Reagan and the 1950s were like yesterday, but 2011 and 2012 are so long ago they’re immaterial.

Ask me yesterday if this makes sense.

…Okay… You guys want to have your cake and eat it, too. Here, let’s sum up the argument.

2012 was a vote based on the GOP’s 2010 abortion record, but not so in 2010 relative to 2008.

Democratic gains in 2012 were because of the GOP’s abortion stance but the GOP’s gains in 2010, and subsequent legislation, had nothing to do with the Democrats abortion stance since 2008 and were acting contrary to the will of those who elected them.

Did I get that right?

(Yes, I did.)

Good luck justifying the above sans mental gymnastics.

BTW> It wasn’t Republicans who threatened to shut down the government over abortion. That was the Democrats. Someone apparently doesn’t remember Boxer’s “line in the sand” or Reid’s “we’ll take it to the people” remarks during budget negotiations.

You mean when they added a rider to a budget bill to defund Planned Parenthood? This is a very interesting perspective indeed. The Republicans quietly introduce a bunch of bills, the Democrats publicly refuse to quietly go along with that bullshit, and it’s the Democrats that get blamed for making such a fuss. Why, if they’d just shut up and go along with it, there would be no problem!

See, here’s the thing, OMG. You don’t get to have YOUR cake and eat it too. Your team isn’t allowed to just pass willy nilly whatever fucking thing they feel like, and the other side rolls over and lets them do it quietly. When your actions are being brought to public attention, even if you don’t like talking about the things you’ve been passing or trying to pass in secret, that’s not the Democrats trying to make abortion a political issue this year. You’ve already made it one by passing actual laws that restrict abortion access. Just because someone is calling you on it doesn’t mean they are the ones making it an issue. The issue is that they continue to pass wide-reaching abortion restrictions and keep trying to pretend it’s no big deal. That IS an issue.

2012 was a vote partially based on the GOP’s abortion record in 2011 and 2012. “Abortion record” is everything from public comments on abortion to passed or attempted abortion legislation, including legislation that sought to redefine rape or that required invasive, unnecessary testing before abortion.

We also know that in 2010, Republicans ran on fiscal issues, especially the debt and the deficit. We know that the public faces of the Tea Party claimed it was a fiscal party, without a whole lot of dedication to social issues. We also know that that was an… interesting way of speaking considering what they did when elected.

We know that some of the vote was driven by these actions because we have polls that tell us so.

Now, I realize “polls” remain a mystery to Republicans, but don’t be frightened. You, too, can learn to read columns of numbers and understand what people are thinking!

It is easy when in reality you are not dealing with what was said, so yeah, no Republican repudiated what they voted before so it was still in their agenda.

And it is clear that you are just willfully ignoring that in 2010 the Tea Party and supporters concentrated on taxation, (that by pure coincidence it lead to the republican representatives to vote in favor of the rich polluters) they even said many times before that social issues like abortion were not supposed to be important for these “new” representative republicans, they only demonstrated that they fooled most people in 2010 but less in 2012; but tea partiers continue to fool many today, even you.

Actually, this line of argument is exactly parallel to the “class warfare” thingy. We’ll keep enacting policies that benefit the rich and harm the middle class and the poor, but if you dare point this out, “You’re engaging in class warfare!”

To which the response should always be, “Yeah, ‘bout fuckin’ time!”

The disconnect between republicans and reality is really why they lost. They still don’t get that they aren’t seeing reality. Democrats no longer need to ridicule and mock them, they are making a joke of themselves.

They will not, no cannot, let go of the staunch belief they can turn back time. To when women didn’t want divorces, birth control or abortions, and minorities dared not press for their rights. White Christian Males determined, ‘how it should be’, for everyone, and kept themselves getting rich by gaming the system, in their favour. It was enshrined for so long, they feel entitled to that America. Entitled.

They have become a parody of themselves. And everyone can see it, but them. Like the emperors new clothing!
