Probably. It’s advanced enough to attract the technophiles, and its got a lineup of games that will make any hardcore gamer orgasm on cue. I picture its game progression as being similar to the PS2’s… the first wave of games will be decidedly sparse, but about a year after its release it’ll start getting the good stuff.
Hopefully. Although I’m still oggling that Gamecube, if only for the promise of another Metroid game…
To date, the biggest criticisms I’ve seen of the X-Box have been around the lines of “It’s gonna suck 'cuz it’s Microsoft.” Well, bugger to that… people said similar things about the PSX (and Sony) just before it was released (they also predicted that the N64 was going to be the dominant king, since it had succeeded so well with the SNES). Just goes to show that the gaming market isn’t easily predicted.
I’ve got a PS2. And so far, I see no reason to get an X-Box. I don’t doubt that there will be cool stuff for it, I just haven’t seen a game for it that I have to play that I can’t get on PS2.
And I know it’s only first-generation, but the X-Box stuff I’ve played isn’t that impressive. Granted, this is true for every gaming system–it takes a while for the good stuff to come out.
If I didn’t get a PS2 last year I’d feel more likely to buy an X-Box. But I don’t know about those damned huge controllers…
Until they create a game system which I can plug directly into my brainstem, nothing will live up to the hype.
I don’t care how great a game system is, if the available games don’t interest me I don’t pick it up.
Ah, waiting for the PS9, are we?
As for X-Box, I don’t think we’ve even begun to hear the hype yet. MS has $500,000,000 earmarked for X-Box advertising. I think X-Box will live up to the hype that has thus been generated, but I’m not sure if it’ll live up to the circus MS is going to throw up.
See, that’s the really funny thing: The X-Box controllers fit in my hands perfectly. And I’ve hardly touched a console since the days of the SNES.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to the following on the X-Box: Silent Hill 2 (will be available on both X-Box and PS2), Project Ego (and the X-Box looks like it’d be the only system capable of pulling off a game like that, too), the two Star Wars titles (although I’m getting tired with all these damn Episode I games), Unreal Championship (bigger, better, cooler than Unreal Tournament), and, best of all, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is going to be ported to the X-Box! ::joygasm::
The only thing I’m looking forward on the X-box is Oddworld!!! Abe’s gonna be in 3d…woohoo!!
DOA3 & Soul Calibur II
~WOOHOO!!!
I have a Dreamcast(that i still love) but will be getting the Xbox for Christmas. My three daughters & I are huge fans of 3D fighting games. So we’re looking forward the two games I mentioned.
Oh, and I’m getting Halo & Unreal asap.
Maybe I’m a little out of touch, but I don’t see the point of the X-Box. Honestly, it has a 733mhz processor, 64mb and the equivalent of a GF2Ultra. PCs can have up to 2.0Ghz processors, 1Gig and up of memory, better sound, GF3 or Radeon 8500, etc…
I don’t think there is one feature on the X-Box that is not better implemented in PCs.
If I’m missing something (which I probably am) please tell me what it is.
Why would anyone want an X-Box?
How much do each of those things cost?
Xbox, with mentioned hardware, $300. A fully juiced PC is 3-5x as much money.
Ahhh! I knew there was something I didn’t consider! For the price, it does seem like a good deal.
Mulitple reasons:
Many games will only be available on the X-Box/cosole systems
Not everyone can afford a $2000 computer
PC’s have been known to lack in the the aspect of non-internet mulitplayer. i.e., you and your buddies are all in a room playing the same game on the same system.
Plus, console games just have a different ‘feel’ than PC games. (Maybe it 'cause you can sit on a couch?)
Personally, I don’t like the X-Box. Partly because it’s Microsoft, and they haven’t proven that they can produce super-stable OS and hardware yet (though the Windows CE platform they used for the Dreamcast was fairly good, but I don’t beleive they are using that (seeing as anyone could make bootleg copies of Dreamcast games.)) Also, I’ve heard various internet rumors from respectable sites about falling behind in production, demo models not working right, etc…Now, granted, rumors are just that: rumors. But, rumors get started for reasons. There has to be something going on that sparks these rumors that I just don’t seem to hear from GameCube. (I’m not saying there aren’t bad things being said about the GameCube, I just tend to hear more from X-Box, is all.)
Plus, GameCube has the reputation of a company that has always produced a solid, excellent cosole system. The N64 only did so bad becase it was a bitch to program for, as a result very few great games were made for it. But the GameCube is just as easy to program for as the PS2 or X-Box, so many great games will be made for it.
Also, I am looking forward to the new Zelda, Metroid, and Star Wars: Rogue Leader (which I don’t think is one of the Star Wars one’s for X-Box.)
Just a quibble–the integrated video hardware is the equivalent of a GF3, not a gf2 and it’s wired into the processor, using a rather burly, high-bandwidth bus.
Other than, I agree with the whole sentiment of “blah.” You even have to install games to the built-in hard drives. It also has broadband support, so this means…patches. Double blah.
On the other hand, my opinion could easily change if no one works out an x-box “emulator” for PC that can handle Soul Calibur 2 (when it comes out).
You haven’t been following the XBox criticism, then. The controllers, the games, the big-ass ugly case…
Yes, but Sony has a long history (even pre-PlayStation) of developing consumer electronics. What’s Microsoft got, other than an ability to repackage HP optical mice with their own brand name?
And then, of course, there are reports out that the XBox demo units are already crashing and hanging in the stores. Can’t wait to hear the first reports about some kid buying a new XBox and getting a BSOD in the middle of his game.
(For whoever cares, I went to Toys 'R Us the other day and saw an XBox kiosk. I thought I’d finally get a chance to take it for a spin, but all of the titles on the demo disc were non-interactive canned video clips (except for the legal disclaimer(!!!)) – and even the clips weren’t as impressive as the PS2 running Midnight Club Racing next to it. That does not inspire a lot of confidence in this long-time gamer, let me tell you…)
First off, I’m really, really reluctant to buy a video game system created by a computer company. The last thing I want is a system where EVERY game requires two hours of study just to get the basics down.
I had this same beef about the PS2 (along with the continental drift-like pace of development, and spare me your excuses), but even I have to admit that they do have some good stuff out…CART Fury, Klonoa 2, and probably that dance game (Unison), for example. They’re also going to have Time Crisis 2 soon. Furthermore, the PS2 has perhiperals…you know, a real joystick, a Gameshark, capacious memory cards, etc.?
These things matter to me, dammit. I’m through buying into hype. And so far the X-Box looks like an extremely green, not very reliable system that’ll neet a LOT of improvement before I’ll even consider buying it.
And to think that I used to have misgivings about buying a Super NES…
Heh. I wonder if the X-Box comes with its own customized Blue Screen Of Death.
'Cause I guarantee buyers are going to be seeing a lot of them.
Seriously, heat is suspected to be a major problem for these Microsoft devices, which will no doubt be stuffed away into tight places and will probably run constantly.
Let me say that again, for laughs: “Windows… run… constantly.”
Heh. Five years after the release of Windows 95 and two years after Windows 98, it was discovered that there was a fatal bug in both programs which would cause them to crash after 47 days. Why did it take so long for anyone to find that out? Because nobody ever got either of those programs to run that long! They all crashed and burned well before that.
We consider Windows 2000 to be “stable” because it only crashes to the desktop on a daily basis. That ain’t gonna be much solace to a ten-year-old kid who’s finally got the edge on the Big Boss, is it?
And, in traditional beta-test-the-public fashion, the demo machines crash every 90 minutes. The explanation was supposedly the use of an old graphics library on the demo disk.
So I gotta ask, how many software developers missed that little update, just like Microsoft themselves did? And what about the hundreds or thousands of other updates that have been handed out?
Remember, Microsoft’s one saving grace is the release of patches for patches for patches, all available to anyone who has Internet access.
But MS has temporarily spiked Internet access for the X-Box. A game that ships broken is just that: broken, until physically replaced.
Oh, yeah. And there are only 200,000 units shipping before Christmas. You’ll have to be the first guinea p-- customer in line to even get one.
Yeah, I’ve had a bad day today with MS products. So what of it?
A list of the accesories that will be available for the X-Box:
Mad Catz Premium Controller
HDTV Hookup Cable
Mad Catz Memory Card (complete with completed games!!!)
Panther Stick (looks like a fighter pilot control on speed)
drumroll please . . . . .
Voice Communicator (When they start MS gaming network, you’ll be able to put this headset on and speak in real-time to opponments and team members all over the world - in theory)

It’s all about the games. So far every game I want is on the PS2. Plus I doubt I’ll be able to stop playing Grand Theft Auto 3 long enough to even think about another game or console next month.
I tried to win one through Taco Bell, but I guess I didn’t since I haven’t heard anything. If it’s free I’ll get it.
I doubt the games will crash. Remember, the thing that causes windows to crash all the time is the fact that everyone has different hardware and configurations (well most crashes are from this). A console configuration is consistent. They can test the hell out of it and then ship it knowing that it will work the same on all units, unless the unit is defective, which happens sometimes.
Although Microsoft apparently doesn’t test ANYTHING, so maybe things WILL crash.
Speaking of Microsoft testing, in a tangentally related item…
Did you hear about the Microsoft Hotmail snafu this week? Microsoft “upgraded the security” for their Hotmail service – and it suddenly stops working with the Mac version of Microsoft Outlook (e.g., you can no longer use MS Outlook to access your MS Hotmail account).
Which implies that Microsoft didn’t test their upgrade with their own software.
Wow… say “X-Box” and all the MS-haters come out of the woodwork.
K.OS…
You’re missing something. On a console, all the games are programmed specifically for that system. As such, they run far more efficiently. On a PC, a game designer must put a lot of effort into making the games compatible with potentially thousands - or even millions - of different system configurations. As such, they lose a good deal of performance.
Further, the graphics card in the X-Box is just as powerful as the GeForce. Hell, it was made by nVidia specifically to run on the X-Box.
Rjung…
If those are the only criticisms the X-Box has, people should be hailing it as the Console of the Gods.
A long history of making games, that Sony didn’t have before they came out with the PSX.
And how many demo units of the PS2 were available for playing prior to its release? Not a whole helluva lot. For the record, I was playing the X-Box just two days ago, over at Circuit City. I was going through that Oddworld demo for over an hour (I was killing time before rehearsal started). Not a single glitch. Not a single hangup. Plus, I found the controls to be very intuitive.
DKW…
Why would you think that every game requires two hours of study to get the basics down? It took me five minutes to figure out how to play Oddworld, and I’ve barely even touched a console in five years.
Sofa King…
Aw, heck with it. I’m not even going to bother.
c_goat…
Good man. It’s refreshing to see someone who doesn’t get his kicks by spouting irrational Ignorance.
The reason I’ve never been jazzed about the PS2 is, to me, the game lineup has been “Eh”. I hear everyone screaming “Gran Tourismo 3!” at the top of their lungs, to which my reply is, “I don’t care much for GT3.” The Squaresoft games are nice, but not as fantastical as they used to be in bygone days.
