will we see 1 tb sized games in the next few years?

seeing how huge games are getting and the fact most new hard drives start at 1-5 tbs for pcs and consoles do you think it wont be that long until we see a 1 tb game?

Im looking for a hd for my ps4 and im told anything under 2 TBs is a waste of money and bu the end of this processor cycle/concole gen and the next it might just haooen
will it be that soon or wishful thinking ?

For an arbitrarily large game size, we’re gonna see them at some point. I just re-loaded XCom 2, and it needed 70 gigs, and that’s like 3 years ago. I’d be surprised if we don’t see 1 Tb games within 5 years.

Here’s a Reddit thread where someone talks about their 4 Tb flight simulator.

oh dear lord let me edit the op

heh I remember when I bought a 1.5 gig hd and everyone was saying I was showing off because id need 100 games to fill it up ………

I think you might well see games with add-ons - particularly texture packs and videos - that get past the 1 TB mark. 4K videos and textures consume a lot of space and 8K videos and textures will consume vastly more. The big problem for such a large game is going to be distribution. Most people simply don’t have the bandwidth to download such a large amount of data in a reasonable time.

I don’t think we’ll see this for the next generation of consoles as they are rumoured to only have 1 TB drives. But maybe the refresh or the following generation.

actually the way most console people do it is to buy external hds the one I have for the Xone is 4 ……

Games that can be played in a table spoon?
Count me in!

Tangentially related, do any of you gamer boffins have recommendations for an external hard drive for the Xbox one? I’ve looked on Amazon and there are several choices but the reviews are all over the place. Red Dead Redemption 2, for instance, is north of 100GB… that’s a huge chunk of the Xbox’s native memory.

In my experience the biggest games I’ve ever had were MMOs with multiple DLCs/expansions. A next generation MMO with 4K graphics, huge maps, and tons of cutscenes and dialogue might well top 1 TB eventually.

You won’t see TB-size games in the next few years. That’s 10x larger than the largest games today and no media exists to convey them. Plus you couldn’t distribute those games digitally, which is the future of gaming (and publishers like it because it kills used games.)

I think it’d be gen 10 consoles at the earliest. (We’re on 8th gen now, if anyone isn’t keeping track.)

actually I have the official Seagate xbox 2tb hard drive …… its green I think we paid 70 for it
it went back up…… but here it is Amazon.com: Seagate STEA2000403 Game Drive for Xbox STEA2000403-Hard 2 TB-USB 3.0-Green, 2TB : Video Games

It’s been quite a few years back but I one day received an email from my ISP informing me that they were going to institute a cap of 5GB per month because only a small number of service abusers used more than that. I opened that email while I was downloading an 11GB online game (WoW).

I switched internet providers immediately. When they asked why I was canceling my service I told them “Because I don’t want to do business with a company whose leadership is so completely out of touch with the real world.”

BTW, that ISP canceled their planned 5GB cap before it actually went into effect.

So yeah, I think 1TB games will come to be.
