Will you be excited this new years eve? Is 2001 the real millenium for you?

I dumped on the idea before, but with 2 months to go, it’s sounding really important. I want to make it a big night, so I’m planning a major bash.

I’m sorry, but I have to say no. Despite all the arguments for 2001 being the start of the new millennium, I already celebrated it back in 2000. Oh, sure it’s still a new years celebration and I’m going to party, but it doesn’t feel millennial.[sup]1[/sup] And the fact that few people are talking up the 2001 millennial event and the death of the so-called “Millennial Year”[sup]2[/sup] and the failure for the world to end as we know it[sup]3[/sup], I doubt that 2001 can claim the celebretory mantle.

However, 2002…That’s going to be a blast[sup]4[/sup].

[sub]1. We’ve had a giant build up to 2000 that began back a few days before Jan 1. 1999. No one has been hyping 2001. ABC has yet to display their 2001 graphic. They were hyping their 2 [three globes] graphic since around 1984.

  1. Where were the supposed year long exibits, introspections and celebrations that the ambitious scholars, artists, and marketing folks were talking about.

  2. Am I the only one to feel cheated out of a doomesday? Not even my “Old Bessie” – the PC I had since 1992 – malfunctioned. Not even a damn snowstorm to provide an assist.

  3. I’ll be able to drink, legally. 'Nuff said.[/sub]

There certainly seems to be less hoopla and ballyhoo this time around. No major plans here.

I’m kind of disapointed. I didn’t celebrate the Millenium this year, because I was saving it for next. Now it looks like everybody’s already partied out.

Last Dec 31/Jan 1, I was in bed - TRYING to stay awake for midnight. I think hubby and I roused from out doze, said “Happy New Year”, then turned off the TV and went back to sleep.

I expect this year will be similar. Are we party animals or what???

I’ll be celebrating the real millenium this year. I partied hard last year but in my heart I knew the truth. This year those around me mightn’t party quite as hard but hey… at the end of the night we’ll party regardless.

I’m planning a much bigger event than are any of you.

Dec 31, 2000 will be twenty years to the day since my divroce was final.

Jan 1, 2001 will be five years to the day since I married the second Mrs Style.

I WILL celebrate the 31st, and had BETTER have some party left in me for the 1st.

Yes, 2001 is the start of the new millenium. No, I am not excited about it. That’s not to say I won’t be excited on NYE, though; maybe I’ll be having sex.

I had to work Jan. 1, because of that Y2K thing (does anyone remember that?); so I didn’t party too hard last year…just stayed home and had a few drinks with my BF.

But THIS year will be different. New millenium or not (but it is), I’ll be partying my a** off. I have a hotel room reserved; I won’t be driving, so I can party to my hearts content, and I won’t have to worry about the other drunks on the road.

You better believe I’m making this the big party, but only because I have to.

I, unfortunately, had to work the overnight shift for New Year’s Eve last year, on ‘Y2K’ watch. Yeah, I missed the biggest party ever.

Oh well, someday I’ll tell the grandkids, “Way back in my day, they were so scared that all the computers were going to malfunction …”

I’ve been a big arguer for 2001 being the start of the 3rd Millennium, AD.

But really, any group of 1000 years is a millennium. 2000-2999 is a millennium that can be called “The 2000’s”.

And since the 99 to 00 rollover was such a big deal in computer circles, that NYE got more hype.

What I want to know is: where’s Moon Base Alpha (1999), the Eugenics Wars (1996), and the manned mission to Jupiter (2000-2001)? We haven’t had a man leave the Earth/Moon system ever, and no men have been to the moon in 28 years.

Science fiction: what a gyp!

My hubby was also on Y2k watch that night, so we ended up spending the evening at home with the children. But it really wasn’t that bad. We played board games with the kids, which is something we rarely ever get to do because of our busy schedules. We put on dance music and got a kick out of watching the little ones try to dance to it. We had party favors and nonalcoholic champagne for midnight. We even had some leftover fireworks from the Fourth of July that we lit off at midnight.

For this year, we haven’t made any plans yet. We both know that the real Millennium is this year, but without the hype going on that was going last year, it is a little harder to get excited by it.

Who cares if it’s the “real” one?
We didn’t care last time, did we?
Party, party, party!

I will feel a sense of relief.

Everyone will finally agree that it’s the 21[sup]st[/sup] century CE. When interrupted in my daily meanderings by anomalies from another age, like all those [PiG-13] pseudo-victorian houses they insist on building around Toronto, I can then mutter darkly into my beard, “gotta drag these people into the twenty-first century”, and then go on to search the sky for my remote-controlled flying car as it lands under autopilot-control.
