Wimbledon 2008

My word, whatever do you mean?

No. Here are the current rankings.

Nadal got 1000 pts for winning The Championships. Federer received 700. Therefore, there was a swing of 600 pts this year.

Hey, Red Fury, some year for Spain, eh???

Afraid it gets quite a bit more complicated than that, Marley.

Again, the ATP race and the South African Airways ATP Ranking do not distribute points in the same fashion. Again one is rolling, the other one calendar year. Rather confusing but there it is.

Have a look:

Full South African Airways Rankings

Here you’ll find Fed at number one albeit with just a 545 point lead over Nadal.

ATP RACE

Here you’ll find Rafa a clear number one by virtue of his Wimbledon win.

You can also click on any player’s name to see the different points breakdown for either race.

Hope that’s not overly confusing.

BTW, GS events get top points at 1000, Masters Cup up to 750, MS go for 500, other top events get 250 and so on down the line.

Have a look at the points break down by race at last years Masters Cup:

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS ATP RANKING POINTS/ATP RACE POINTS:

*Each Round Robin Match Win – 20 ATP Race points – 100 South African Airways ATP Ranking points

*Semifinal Win – 40 ATP Race points – 200 South African Airways ATP Rankings points

*Final Win – 50 ATP Race points – 250 South African Airways ATP Rankings points
Undefeated Champions – 150 ATP Race points – 750 South African Airways ATP Ranking points

Tell me about it, DS. Don’t know whether I should pinch myself or not, because if it is a dream, it’s certainly one I don’t want to wake from any time soon. Waiting 44 and 42 years respectively for each feat.

I’m familiar with both, I just didn’t draw enough of a distinction: I was referring only to the rankings, I’ve always just sort of ignored the champions race. But you did set me straight on the points values. There’s also a wildcard this year in the form of the Olympics, which is going to be played on a DecoTurf surface - like the U.S. Open.

Next year, Federer will win both the French and Wimbledon opens… mark these words! As good as Nadal has been in defeating Federer in both contests, it was more The Fed’s mistakes that lost him those games. Doubling his opponents unforced errors is simply unheard of for Federer, and I think he’ll show true greatness, and come back even stronger, to continue their amazing rivalry.

Hey, I respect Fed as much as the next guy, he’s earned as much and then some, but if you’ll pardon my saying so it is downright silly to say that Nadal’s trashing of the man at RG had anything to do with Fed’s game. UF’s? Get used to them – Nadal’s trademark from day one. He simply forces his opponents into making at least twice as many as he does. No need to take my word for said factoid…quite welcomed to look it up. Hint: just look at their four encounters in RG. Surely you’ll notice a pattern.

Simply put, Rafa was simply untouchable and utterly dominant at the French this year – more so than ever.

Wimbly? Yes, that should be still in play between the two next year. Maybe.

Missed edit. Obviously, I meant to type UEs as opposed to UFs — don’t know what the latter means.

Oh, and BTW, a 6-12 H2H record between the two (in Rafa’s favor of course) is not exactly something to boast about even if you’re a die-hard Fed fan. Close to pigeon territory in fact…

Considering the way Federer murdered the field into the semis this year I think we can be charitable and say he might be able to compete there next year. And off clay, the two are still evenly matched.

Barring injury or something insane, by the way, it’s inevitable that Nadal gets to be number one eventually. He’s been ranked second for three years running, and for Djokovic to catch him before he catches Federer would take some amazing doing.

Can I say here how amazing it is that Federer has reached 17 straight Slam semifinals or better? Sampras’ longest run of semifinals was three. Borg’s was six - and that’s if you don’t count Australia, because he never played there. Agassi’s longest streak was four, and I think the old record was Lendl’s with nine, which is basically half as long as Federer’s ongoing streak.

Wow, what a match! It still doesn’t eclipse the 1980 Wimbledon marathon between Borg & McEnroe, but it came darn close.

I was impressed by both men’s grace under pressure, tenacity, and class. I was also very pleased to see Roger Federer’s dad standing aside and clapping as Rafa Nadal climbed into the box to hug his parents.

Changing of the guard in one sense, but one has to remember that Federer had mono last year. Anyone who’s ever had mono knows that it can take several months to feel strong again. I honestly don’t think Federer’s 100% healthy yet.

Rafa is incredible and he’s still growing as a player. If he can stay injury-free, he’ll eventually eclipse Federer and take #1. Federer has incredible talent and superb tennis smarts, but he’s peaked as a player. He has nowhere to go but down. That doesn’t mean that I believe he won’t win another major, another Wimbledon or even eventually a French Open. Quite the contrary. But I think that he’s at the top of the his game now and will retire long before he’s viewed as a “has been.” Like Borg, he has a dignity about him that won’t allow him to stay in the game once he doesn’t believe he can dominate.

Very late back to this party, but man – what a match to miss!! I’ve watched nearly every Wimbledon final since the early '80s and this time I was on vacation.

Of course, it’s hard to feel bad about lounging on a tropical beach…

Glad you guys got to see such a great one!

Borg did in fact contest the Australian Open once, at the age of 17 in 1974, going out in 3 sets to Phil Dent in the third round.
