Win XP Browsing Question

Can someone tell me why my computer will not automatically update some web pages, my local newspaper and Enviroment Canada to be specific. If I am away from the computer for a few hours and open either one of these pages I have to refresh the page in order to see any updates. This one is the only computer in the house that runs XP and the only one that this is an issue with. I am running IE7 on this machine. I am usually pretty good at resolving these issues but I have very linited Xp knowledge and this has been bugging me for almost two years. Googling the problem has not helped either.

You are mixing thoughts between the operating system (XP) and the web browser (IE7) running on the operating system.

Web pages do not automatically update with new content unless the web page creator has used code to refresh the web page automatically, or you refresh the web page yourself (providing the page updated in between manual refreshes).

I you have trouble returning to a webpage and find that its content does not update until you refresh then, in IE7 click Tools >> Internet Options. Under ‘Browsing History’ click Settings. Under ‘Temporary Internet Files’ and ‘Check for newer versions of stored pages:’ select one of
o Every time I visit the webpage
o Every time I start Internet Explorer
o Automatically
but do not select
o Never

I understand the difference between a web browser and the os, it just does not seem to be an issue with IE7 but an issue with XP. I am using IE7 on four other computers in the house and garage but they have 2000 Pro on them and it’s not an issue. The issue is not that I expect it to update automatically while I am looking at it, it’s an issue like this…say I am following the Infra red satellite imagery and I am watching a weather system over my local area. If I close the window, literally X it out, and come back two hours later to see an update and open a new page it is at the same place I left it so I have to refresh the page. This does not happen on any of the other computers here in the house, they just automatically open to the lastest images. Sorryif I was not clear in the op.

Corner Case,
That was it , thank you very much…almost 2 years of XP sucks because of this…lol. I did not even know that was there, I went to one of the other computers and it does not have that on the main option pages, it is runing IE6. Anyway thanks again.

As has been explained, the issue is with the configuration of the browser and nothing to do with the OS.
