My son has his home computer set up with a password to start Windows. He changed it the other day, and tested it after resetting it. Now, next time he tried to boot it, he can’t get it to work. This is an area I know nothing about. What can he do?
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts you will see the manufacturer’s screen (HP, Dell, etc.) At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Log in as ‘Administrator’
Navigate to Start/Control Panel/User Accounts/Change an Account.
Select the user with the bad password.
Select either “Change the Password” or “Remove the Password”.
Reboot the computer and logon as the original user.
Thanks for trying to help. His computer hangs up when he gets past
I dunno what to do from there. Has something perhaps gone wrong with the OS?
Sorry to be so slow getting back to report further.
He got back to me the following day to say that he’d left it on, though apparently hung up (as mentioned above). And - eventually - it went on to where he needed it. He was able to fix the problem, and I was to pass along his thanks. I decided I’d better put this last up, Just In Case someone else with a similar problem searches, finds this, and their computer seems to take forever to load the right applet.
