I searched for an answer on this on google and SDMB, but had no luck. Anyway…
The Start Menu–>Programs and the Favorites folder both hold icons/shortcuts like normal folders (and can be accessed like normal folders on the hard drive). They also have separate ways to view them–that is, they show up in the start menu and Favorites menu and you access.
Here’s the problem: the shortcuts in my Start Menu and Favorites menu REFUSE to arrange alphabetically. They’re in some haphazard order: not by date, not by disk order, not by type, just random. I’ve gone to the individual folders and selected View --> Arrange --> By Name, and it arranges the icons in the actual folder, but then when I try to access the menu version of the folder, they’re still in a random order.
I tried copying the shortcuts to another folder and copying them back, but that doesn’t work either. This has only happened to me in Win98 (not 95 or 2000) and on 3 computers. Any advice would be appreciated.
Okay. What you need to do is left click on whatever menu you’re trying to arrange. A menu will pop up. Near the bottom of the new menu you should see the Sort By Name command. Click on that and that should do it.
Bring up Windows Explorer, navigate to a directory and set the view as you wish.
Then click on Tools/folder options, and select the “View” tab.
You will see text that reads “Folder views” and “You can make all your folders look the same”. Click on the button labeled “Like current folder” and Bob’s your uncle.
Also, in the “Advanced Settings” pane, there is an option titled “remember each folder’s view settings.” This may or may not be useful to you.
