I just moved into a huge house with my 2 brothers. I’m considering putting in a window unit to cool the office rather than cool this entire section of house.
One of my brothers is afraid that it will put too much moisture in the room and ruin computers, books, etc. Is there anything to worry about?
Nope…nothing to worry about. Cooler air has less capacity to hold moisture so the air inside will be drier than outside (probably…assuming a humid climate). The AC unit does produce waste water from condensation on the cooling coils but properly installed that water will drain on the outside of the building.
If you are installing an air conditioner, then there is no worries. Air conditoning removes moisture from the air.
If on the other hand you are considering putting in an evaportive air cooler, you will be adding moisture to the air.
A/C uses refridgeration, swap coolers use evaporation.
While this is MOSTLY correct, problems can arise if the unit is blowing on some of the things in question. ie if the AC is blowing on the computer, or near enough that it is causing it to cool sufficiently it will indeed condensate just as the evap coils in the AC unit do. That could cause a problem.
