Windows 10 splash screen image?

Or whatever you call the high res photo that pops up when you wake the computer. It used to show a random image but seems to be stuck on some castle I don’t like. I just want it to be random again. Perhaps I did something that locked the image one day?

These are the instructions for how to change the lock screen settings. It may have got changed to “picture” or “slideshow?” I’m not sure why it would be stuck on just one “spotlight” image, but perhaps setting it to “picture” or “slideshow,” restarting the computer, and then setting it back to “spotlight” would do the trick?

Here’s another approach. Navigate your disk Explorer to
C:\Users\mixdenny\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets

You’ll find that folder full of files with names like
22167a72ee39fe8720ab032cb214edb21862cd06094b76d22be3a973be823304
with no extension. Those are actually the spotlight images in JPG format. As you can prove by adding a JPG extension to any of them and double-clicking.

You might try saving all the files to a different temporary backup folder then deleting them all. That should force a download of new image(s). At a minimum it’ll get rid of your unhappy castle. If that creates unwanted side effects, restore the files from your temp backup.

Quicker than reading through the link that NinthAcolyte (above) provided; just right click the desktop & chose ‘Personalize’. You can probably sort it from there.

There are pre-installed images (Microsoft) you can select for your slideshow, or you can select photos of your choice - your dog, cat, whatever. Just browse for the folder your photos are in and select ‘Slideshow’ from the drop down menu.

Why your computer stopped doing the slideshow is ‘one of those mysterious computer things’. You could spend hours hunting for the cause, or just reset it.

I followed the instructions for the spotlight images. It was already set to “spotlight”. At any rate, the images have once again become random.
