Windows 2K install error

My grandmother’s computer (A kinda-new Dell bought used) had Windows 2000 installed on it. Then it locked up and we couldn’t get the password from the old owner (they died). So my uncle formatted it and installed Windows 98 against my protests.

Yesterday 98 started refusing to load, only loading in safe mode. Step-by-step bootup shows it loads the MSMouse.vxd (or whatever the extention for the mouse driver is) and then crashes.

So I put in another harddrive and try to install Windows 2000 Professional SP2. After much muddling around with bootdisks and whanot I finally get it going…which is where I get this wonderful error message.

"The following value in the .sif file used by Setup is corrupted or mising:

Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDiskFiles] with key “SP2.cab”

I’ve used this disk to install Win2K on another machine, and it worked just fine. Can someone please tell me what’s going on? Is the disk bunk or…? Danke in advance.

Are you booting from the Win2K CD? Or using floppies? Either way it sounds like something is corrupted with the source files. If you’re using the CD, it could be that her CD drive is filthy, or the floppy drive, if you’re using the boot disks, could be filthy also.
Mie too sentc.

I’m using four boot disks (made from the program on the CD). It reads the disks just fine, and seems to read other disks with no problem.

Is it the same file that gets the error everytime? I would definately try a make some new disks. Also, try and found out if the Bios support CD-Rom booting, this is alot easier than using the diskettes.

You might want to test the RAM. Memtest86 is a good free utility.

Indeed, I am getting the same error message time and time again. And indeed it would be easier to boot from the CD-ROM, but this disk is not bootable. And I really appreciate the help guys, any more questions just ask away. Until I get his fixed I’m not going anywhere.
