OK, I want to improve performance a little by setting my Windows 98se swap file to one size only, instead of letting Windows shrink and grow it.
I, for now, have 512 megs of memory, how big do I set my swap file for? I’ve read figures that it should be set for 2.5x to 3x the amount of memory, but one web site said that if you have over 128 megs, it should be smaller.
Also, when I eventually go upto 1 gig of memory, what size should I change it to?
FYI, Win98 won’t handle more than 512MB of RAM (easily, that is… see my troubles here for details…).
As to your paging file question, I have read various sizes espoused… but it’s a bit more complicated than someone just telling you a size… do you have more than one hard drive? If so, do the drives spin at differing speeds? What kinds of things do you use your computer for (gaming, web surfing, etc.)? The placement and size (absolute or min/max) of the paging file can depend on the answers to those questions (Among others! For example you can spread the paging file among several drives, or keep one paging file on the fastest drive… depending on your needs.), but I think I’ll let someone more experienced answer. I’m learning, but still not ready to give advice!
Ok! That simplifies things a bit. (pending someone with more experience popping in, the following…)
In that case (take all this with a grain of salt… I’m a newbie!), I’d just let Win98 handle the paging file. However, if you are determined to set the size yourself, try setting it with a max and min size of 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have. With 512Mbs, that would be 768Mb. Try that, and see how it works for you… you can always resize it later if needed.
