Windows 98 problem

My ISP often disconnects me. I used to get a warning on my screen before disconnection but not anymore. I’m currently running windows 98. Is there a setting I’m missing to get that warning message again?

That was dumb, guess I should mention I’m also running Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

You should ask your ISP if you used their software. Otherwise look around in start;programs;accessories;communications;dialup networking

You could try to set you email program to look for mail more frequently, like every three or four minutes. Sometimes the ISP will disconnect when it does not detect any activity on your machine for five minutes or more.

Who is your ISP? I bet it’s AOL.

Nope, it’s a local ISP. Already have m e-mail set to check every 8 minutes. Just wondering what became of my pop-up warning.

As far as the pop-up message goes, I don’t know. I used to get the same thing and then it just disappeared one day and I have not seen it since.

I also use IE and Outlook express. I also have the same problem of losing my connection. I set my Outlook to check for mail every 1 minute. You probably already know this, but just in case, Outlook Express has to be open (not minimized) to check for mail, at least on my computer. I just keep my browser window in front. Works like a charm.

Did you at least goto Settings -> Control Panel -> Modem -> and then set its properties (e.g. uncheck Auto Disconnect or give it some more times - like 20 min - before it auto-disconnect)?

With W98 and older versions, after a new install, I used to get auto disconnect problems, even when I’ve uncheck the auto-disconnect. To resolve, after logging on for the first time after a new OS install, I just wait for about 20 min and that auto disconnect warning will pop out (like I said, even after I’ve unchecked it and no warnings set). At this point, I turn it off and it never bothers me again.

Also, whatever, if possible (I remember if you can with W98 but Win ME you can), you can send ‘remain-alive’ signals at an interval you set. Some programs such as Free Agent can let you do that kind of thing too.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Ack, I mean ‘…I don’t remember if you can or not with W98…’ Sorry, bad grammar. I hate doing this when I’m writing but I do it quite often. :frowning:
