Windows folder customization

I recently did a system restore on my hard drive (only one so far…much better than my previous computer, that’s for sure!). While this was a much-needed step that had several benefits, not the least of which was getting Firefox back (a necessity since Chrome seems to have gone off the deep end…more on this in some other thread), it meant that the formatting for my many, many files just got reset.

Now, if I go to Properties and click the customize tab, there’s an option to “Optimize this folder for”, and then I can select one of five preset options, and also apply to all subfolders. The problem is that what I want is pretty specific, particularly when it comes to music files. My plan was to first set my entire hard drive to medium icons, and then, when I come across a folder where I wanted something different, change it. The problem is that none of the five preset, ham-handed, fixed, unbreakable, COMPLETELY WORTHLESS FOR MY NEEDS (sorry, some lingering bitterness over having to factory reset my hard drive in the first place) preset options are what I want.

So…

  1. Is there any way to change any of the preset options?
  2. Is there any way to make an option of my own?
  3. Failing 1 & 2, is there any way to just set everything to medium icons so that I at least have a starting point?

If it matters, I’m using Windows 7.

It’s a little bass-ackward but you can modify a folder’s view settings and then apply that customization for all folders of that type. This means you’d have to make your changes 5 times but that’s better than having to do it 100s of times, right?

Finally got around to this. Incredibly counterintutiive and RIDICULOUSLY cumbersome, but I was finally able to make it work.

Thanks! This is going to save a lot of time!
