Windows/Internet Explorer multiple windows

I recently got a new computer with WindowsME. Previously, with Windows98 and prior, if I went to Windows Explorer and highlighted several URLs in my Favorites at the same time, and then selected OPEN, the system would open up each of the webpages in a separate launch of Windows Explorer. This was convenient, since if I had a group of pages that I want to view together regularly, I can open them all up at once, rather than go back to Favorites to open each one up individually. However, when I do this in WindowsME, it just opens the first one. (I’ve checked the IE setup, to be sure that I don’t have the re-use windows checked.)

Is this just a “feature” of WindowsME that I can’t get around, or is there a way to get Explorer/MyComputer to launch multiple IE windows when I have a multiple selection of URLs?

If you’re a multiple window type personality (like me) - get Opera (http://www.opera.com)

It handles multiples far far better than IE (far!).

Geez, going into Explorer to highlight the Favourites seems awfully convoluted. I just don’t know how this is done in IE – I do agree it’s a great feature in Opera – but I’d like to be able to do it. Lets see if anyone else bites …bump

re: Opera
Well, yes, but that doesn’t answer the question. I need to use Internet Explorer (for various reasons), so I want to be able to find a way to open a list of websites all at one time. Opera is not an option for my situation.

re: Convoluted
Yes, maybe a little convoluted, but Windows Explorer is the only place I’m aware of that I can highlight a group of Favorites. If IE itself had this capability, that would be great, but I’m not aware of any option to do so.

Also, I’m sure there are utilities somewhere that will open IE multiple times according to a script, but I really didn’t want to add additional levels of software. The Windows Explorer opening procedure worked so well, and was so simple, in Windows98 and prior, that I think, there’s GOT to be a way to do it in WindowsME.

i vaguely remember IE has some setting where you can chose “open in new window” or “Open in same window” and this is probably what makes the difference… I’ll see if I can find it.

If using IE 5.01 or newer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and uncheck Reuse windows for launching shortcuts. Hope this helps!

I have a feeling it’s a Windows ME problem, and not IE. I’ve already unchecked the re-use windows option in IE, and that’s what made it work with Windows98 and 95. However, with ME, I have this feeling that something in the way Windows Explorer opens the files, it stops after the first instance of IE opening, so you don’t get the multiple windows like you did before. Anyone know of a way to tweak Windows ME to make it do this?

Then it’s probably the file association for HTML documents. Have you tried messing around with that?

I’m wondering if it’s related to the fact that every time IE opens a new window, it’s almost as if a whole separate programme is loading (not quite “whole” and I can’t recall the additional drain but I believe it is pretty significant). If that’s so, then it might make sense to not encourage multiple windows to be opened simultaneously because of the potential for the system to crash / freeze (people having a variable amount of memory)

Opera is very different in that a new window causes virtually no additional drain on resources.

Possible ?

How about just make a folder on the desktop with all your favorite website links contained in it & then select them & use OPEN.

If you put a link to each web site in your startup folder they should all launch when you start the computer. As the person said above, be sure you didn’t set it to reuse the same window, but to open a new one for each web site. Also read the instructions for IE or Netscape.
