Oh, nuts, they rearranged things at microsoft, so I can’t find it either but try this site anyway, it’s got lots of hints & info, tons really on w98: http://www.annoyances.org/win98/
Fippo, I think you are confusing different things. Your original question referred to logging into Windows and it is not that the OS should remember any passwords rather that it should not require one.
That is what I addressed in my long earlier email which should resolve this issue. Since you make no comment on it I assume you have not tried it.
The other issue refers to the DUN password and it is a quirk that you need to have tha client for microsoft networks installed for the DUN to remember the password.
Two different things.
Windows uses the login password to encrypt the DUN password. If you don’t have the first, you can’t encrypt the second, and thus Windows is trying to “do you a favor” by not storing your DUN password in clear text where it might be stolen when you log in to your ISP.
As MS is so fond of saying, “this behavior is by design.”
He’s the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armor, shouting ‘All Gods are Bastards!’
I think you are confusing two different things (or I am the one confused).
One thing is the login password when you start the computer when you have several users. That is what we are talking about I believe.
Another totally different thing is the DUN password that allows you to log into your ISP. They are totally different things and unrelated.
Ok, just to clarify, my OP was only concerned with the password box that appears when you first boot up windows. This is what I wanted to get rid of. All the solutions provided failed, save one. I was able to use TweakUI to automatically log onto windows, which is sorta what I wanted. I was hoping to just get rid of the box completely, but this seems to be nigh impossible.

Well, if you’re using Win98 and it keeps doing this then something is wrong. Did your PC come with 98 on it? Or did you do an upgrade from Win95? Did you try using the Users icon under Control Panel?

Yeah, there is even a passoword icon in the control panel. Go figure.
fippo, did you try the solution in my earlier long posting? I am quite sure that would do it since it was published in a magazine and seems quite complete.
I knew all along what you problem was, it’s just that other people were talking about other things… I have gone through installing WIN95 many times and have gone through this a number of times.
well hmmm— im not sure abour win98- i just got mine today but it may be the same as win95. just reload it.
well hmmm— im not sure abour win98- i just got mine today but it may be the same as win95. just reload it. And then do what Hail Ants suggested
“Just enter your name (or anything you like) and click OK without typing anything in the password box! Windows will not show the sign-on screen again unless you tell it to.” If you dont put in a password it’ll ask for one just hit ok again
It will? Never in my entire history of using Win98 has it done what you just said it would. It just accepts that I don’t put in a password without second-guessing me. And, although I’m not certain why it matters, yes, the machine came with Windows98 installed.

I used to get the W98 PW box a lot after putting in a network setup [boy that was easy too]. Then changed the primary logon to ‘microsoft family logon’ I think thats what it was, restarted & the PW showed itself once or twice and now it doesn’t. I also remember changing the network setting to only logon if necessary or somethin…
