XP logon question

I’ve been using Win XP SPC3 for some time now, and thought I hab it pretty well mastered, but…

My desktop does not have any password, as I’m the only who uses it. I had changed it so the usual logon screen (with my name icon) did not appear so would have to bother clicking that. This was working well, but I was having problems with it not saving my settings when I logged off (even though that screen saying “Saving your settings” appeared a while before it shut down).

I have made several tweaks to my desktop, and it was annoying to have to redo them every time I logged on. I found somewhere a way to change things to prevent that. It has worked well for several months now.

Again, but…

When turn the computer on, after the Win splash screen, I’d get a box to log on. It had my name in there, and I could just click without putting anything in the Password box, and it went on all right. This was sort of a pain, as I could not turn on the computer and go away, as it stopped dead waiting for me to click OK (or hit Enter) in that box to finishing logging on.

Poking around, came across instructilons somewhere that said to go to the Command Prompt and type in “control userpasswords2” and uncheck the box saying “User must enter a user name and password…”

I did this, but then the same box came up, only this time it had Administrator in the name box, and would not go any further until I typed my name in and hit OK. Now that was even more annoying, so went to Control Panel, User Accounts and somehow got it back.

OK, is there any way I can get rid of that box popping up every time I boot before finishing? Without, of course, having it neglect to really save my settings.

And, please, Apple zealots, don’t tell me to get a Mac.
