I have a Windows 98 Comp. and I’ve updated everything on the WMP (I think mine’s version 9). Well, I dont know when it started but for some reason, now it won’t play any streaming movies. It says to
“connect to the internet or insert the removable media on which the file is located, and ten try to play the file again”
Now I figured it had to do with the WMP setting and I’ve messed around with it a bit but it still does not work. What do Ihave to do to get it to work for streaming videos and audio? It maybe a dumb question but that’s my specialty.
Damn thing never works for me either, download it and it crashes the machine or screws up anything that was working (2 machines, same problems on both) binned it and can live without it, and the bloody messenger nonsense.
Don’t know about your problem, but you might want to download Media Player Classic from http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli since it can play all the same stuff and it’s just one executable instead of a mess of stuff.
In a similar vein, you can get jetaudio from http://www.jetaudio.com to play RealPlayer files if you’re sick of the Real Thing…
Have you checked with your ISP to make sure that they haven’t installed a firewall that blocks certain ports or perhaps a proxy server (which will make streaming audio/video over anything but HTTP nigh impossible unless the site supports that protocol for streaming)? If you have a software firewall installed, have you checked to see if it’s blocking outbound connections from WiMP?
Just for kicks, can you list what your WiMP settings are under Tools > Options > Network tab and also what’s listed in Internet Explorer under Tools > Internet Options > Connection tab > dial-up Settings (if using a dial-up connection) or LAN Settings (if you’re using broadband).
I also recommend that you try the old Windows Media Player 6.4 (which has a lot less overhead and I use it almost exclusively). Click Start > Run > and type mplayer2.exe in the dialog box.
