Windows Media Player

Just got new computer with Vista installed. The media player it came with is version 11. version 11 wont accept the songs i’ve downloaded.
how do i roll back to version 10 on my new vista computer?

From where did you download the songs?

You might consider just switching media players altogether, like to WinAmp or something less “judgemental” than Windows Media Player

If they’re protected WMA files, then another player might not support them - not if the WMP kernel doesn’t. (Of course, I’m not really clear on the intricacies of windows DRM.)

No advice I can offer on whether downgrading is possible, and this is one of the bad things I’ve heard about WMP 11 - that it doesn’t support the DRM backup-restore feature that lets you transfer your protected music to a new machine.

If this is the case, can you log into where you got the songs from and re-download them? Many WMA stores allow this sort of thing.

Not quite the same problem but similar.
WMP11 refuses to play my Mylène Farmer Avant Que L’Ombre DVD. Completely legit, numbered limited edition CD/DVD box set at a normally astronomical price.

Fortunately the Toshiba media player included on the laptop has no interest in this DRM crap whatsoever.

From what I know.
The DRM for Vista is at the core and sits at a layer between Vista and the Hardware Abstraction Layer. So its application is unavoidable in any situation.
Rolling back to WMP 10 won’t help.

I’m currently running WMP 11 on XP Home and it plays all manner of ripped and authentic CDs. Can’t vouch for whether any of it was DRM protected in the first place though.

Just another reason I see to not buy Bill’s white elephant.

Although I do not condone piracy or P2P sharing in any way or form.
Honest. G’uv.

I’m running Vista, and have no problems playing 70+ GB of files I have. Most of mine are ripped from my own CDs, but there’s also some that have been purchased from three different online stores.

People seem to be assuming that it’s a DRM problem, but the OP made no such statement.

Could you elaborate on where you downloaded them from? Is it possible that they’re encoded with an optional codec you just haven’t installed on your new system yet?
