Windows VAGUE error message

Maybe I am just a complete dumbass… I have been called this before… Check out this error message I got and perhaps someone could clue me into what is going on. Here is the message:

“There was an internal error and one of the windows you where using will be closed. It is recommended that you save yout work, close all programs and restart your computer.”

Ummm soo something went wrong… What happened though? How do you troubleshoot something like this?

One of your programs fell down. This happens. Windows is stupid. It forgets what it knows how to do; it forgets how much memory it has; it’s not really sure how much drive space you have left; it lets some programs tell it how to run and how much space they should be allocated, while it insists on telling other programs how they should run and how much space they should be allocated.

Bear in mind that the DOS/Windows combo was originally created with the idea that at the end of the day everybody turned their computers off and got a fresh start in the morning. Now, people leave them on all the time and, if they’ve been running for a few days or weeks, things are getting a mite higgledy-piggledy down microprocessor way…

I’d just like to note that the title of this thread is redundant. There are no specific Windows error messages. Unless you speak hex and have a minutely detailed map of the memory registers, you’ll never have any idea what went wrong.

To determine whether it is worth troubleshooting an error message like that, you need to look at how often you are getting it. If we’re talking about something that’s happened once, and not repeated, there is nothing to trouble shoot.

If this happens to you several times a day, you need to start taking note of:

What were you doing just prior to receiving the error?

What other applications were open?

When is the last time you performed such maintenance tasks as, defragmenting your hard drive, scanning your hard drive, checking for updated drivers and windows updates?

If you are having this happen frequently enough to need to trouble shoot it, feel free to come back and tell us what you’ve taken note of as well as what hardware, operating system and software you’re running on a normal basis.

Hrmm I also failed to mention that every time this happens, every one of my programs has an error and must be closed. Does this still apply under your previous explanation?

Should I post the details of the error message?

Building on what Ethilrist says:

This kind of error usually indicates that a program tried to access memory that it should not have access to or that it tried to access a memory segment that does not exist. The program then crashes and gives the infamous “Illegal Operation” message.

What this rather mysterious message means, in practicality, is that Windows is telling you that when that program crashed, it may have screwed with another running program or Windows itself. Windows is advising you to reboot to clear the problem, or face the possibility that continued use of the computer could screw something else up.

Fun, huh?

Youre supposed to click that stupid DETAILS button & itll show you what its bitching about.

But why not just turn the computer off at night? I mean come on, that solves most of these things.
