Sorry if this is more of an MPSIMS, I figured more people could answer me here though.
I really like Windows 98SE. What I’m curious about is, what do the more recent versions of windows have that 98se doesn’t? Anything crucial that I might need due to upcoming technologies? We will probably be getting a new computer in the near future and I’d like to stick with 98se if I can.
I believe WIN2000 is not of the family of WIN9X but of WIN-NT and is not really intended for home computers. While it is more stable, it really is probably not the best thing for a home computer.
I would say if you like WIN98-SE, then stick with it. WIN-ME has some bugs still, or so I’m told.
Well, I’ve been using Win98 for the past 3 years. I just downloaded and installed Windows XP RC1, and I LOVE it. It’s an incredible OS. Very stable, very slick looking, and it is the easiest windows to use yet. It installs hardware with NO prompts…just a small “found hardware…hardware installed” notice in the bottom right of the screen. Basically, the only thing I don’t like about it right now is that no one has drivers for it yet, since it’s still in pre-release form. About 3/4 of the Win2000 drivers work, but some don’t. When the full version is released, and third parties officially support it, it will be incredible. So, my advice: wait for XP.
Also, I have my original Win98 setup still in tact on the machine, with a dual-boot menu setup, so I can choose XP or 98 depending on what I need, but I haven’t gone back out to 98 for a while.
It depends what you want it to do. I bought a system with ME on it, and the only problem I’ve had so far is that I can’t install the LiveJournal client on it.
If you play a lot of games I would stick with 98 - just about everything will run on it. If you are looking for more of a workhorse machine, NT will be more stable.
I believe that the major selling point for ME is that you can roll back to a previous version of your setup if you install something that screws up your system, or your kid messes it up. I’ve never had to use the feature, so I’m not really sure what it actually does.
Win98 SE and WinME are very similar, but I’ve experienced far more bugs with ME.
Windows 2000 is of the NT line. While it does offer increased compatibility over NT 4, it still falls short of the compatibility of 98/ME. However, it is by far more stable than 98/ME.
Like Jman, I’m using Windows XP RC1. Very basically, it uses Win2000’s core for stability, and mixes in the compatibility of 98/ME. It is by far the best Windows OS. However, it also has a new license agreement, and the OS must be activated.
So, unless you need more stability, you don’t need to upgrade anytime soon.
