Windows won't save apps settings - help?

I’ve reset my default apps for video, music, browser, pictures SO many times now. The IT dept manager tried to use another method, but the settings went back to default, including “nothing” for a couple of them. I twice tried putting in the settings and then rebooting without letting the computer go to sleep first. It hates changing these and I’m out of ideas.

While I’m here, I love Everything, the file search app, which beats the Windows search by 100x, but every time it starts up it needs approval. Can I blanket approve these kinds of programs, which I think don’t get installed in the traditional sense? I can’t find a setting.

Also, I can’t find the Sound setting to make that approval request stop making a noise. I tried all the relevant looking Sounds in the tab that has stuff like Asterisk and Calendar Reminder, and I can’t find one that seems to use that sound. I have all the other common ones turned off.

I think you might be in a situation where a fresh install would make more sense than hunting it down. If you’re using an SSD, it’s possible it can’t save data reliably anymore. But most likely the software seems corrupt.

There is a way to set up a shortcut to start a program with administrator privileges. It involves using the task scheduler. But it’s not the safest thing, and it seems odd a searching program would need admin rights. It shouldn’t need to index actual hidden locations. I less it’s just a really old program, I’d be suspicious of it needing to do that.

(If it is an older program, I’d suggest trying to install/run it in a user folder, not Program Files or anything like that.)

I susoect the USC sound issue is related to your inability to save settings. I’ve never had it make a sound once I used the “No Sounds” preset in the Sound options.
