Most games in the past five or so years have been written for XP in mind, so you are fine on that front. Your limiting factors then become RAM, Processor and graphics card, but you’ll need someone who plays more games than I do to help you there.
Any NT based operating system (NT 4.0, Win2000, WinXP) is going to be very unfriendly to older games. This is due to the fact that older games often tried to directly access hardware for performance reasons, which is a no-no under NT. One of the things that makes NT operating systems more stable is that software isn’t allowed to directly access hardware, it has to go through the OS instead. It’s great for stability, but bad for older games.
Games that use DirectX will usually work. XP shipped with the DirectX interface built into it. Some games have patches available that will allow them to run under XP.
Newer games shouldn’t be a problem.
My favorite game was Aliens Vs Predator, XP will not play it.
