So a couple months ago I took in a cat who had two kittens. Obligatory pics. That added three to a family of five pets, making a total of eight. Saturday morning made nine. I found this dogsleeping in my dog’s house. At first I thought she’d just wandered away from her people, so I didn’t mess with her in hopes that she’d find her way back. She ddin’t, and when she was still lurking around my yard two hours later, I took her inside and fed her. I know I’m overloaded, but it was cold and rainy and blustery and I just couldn’t leave her out there. She was freezing and shivery and filthy. She did nothing but sleep all weekend. I called the local shelters, put up a few fliers, posted an ad on craigslist and in the newspaper, and asked the neighbors about her. Nobody knows where she belongs. So I made an appointment with my vet to have her checked over, because she didn’t seem to be in great shape anyway. She is older, filthy, shy, missing an eye, and has what I thought was a tumor of some sort on her stomach. Turned out, its a hernia. She is also heartworm positive and will need to be spayed. So that’s two surgeries plus heartworm treatment, which I can’t afford and this isn’t my dog anyway. My vet says she was probably dropped off because of her health problems, which are expensive. But luckily a local organization called Shoals PAWS is looking at covering her vet bill and finding her a new home. I’m waiting to hear back from them tonight. I’ll be able to foster her myself until they get her a home, if they can just cover the bills because I literally do not have the money. Hereare somemore pictures. Other than the medical problems, which my vet says are totally fixable, she is a very sweet dog. She seems pretty nervous around people and cries when left alone. Ghost heregave up his own personal futon so she could sleep on it all weekend. He’s quite the gentleman. Winky gets along well with the rest of the menagerie. Loves to sleep with the other dogs. The missing eye isn’t all that noticeable, in my opinion. After a good thorough bath and a serious nail trim, plus some good food and a warm place to sleep she is doing much better than when I found her. So that’s pretty much it, just wanted to share a doggy with a sad story who is looking at a happier future. Yay!
Good on ya for helping out the little Beagle girl and the other members of the menagerie. That’s some cool stuff right there.
Damn.
I’m getting kind of misty.
She’s beautiful. If you were closer to home, I would be tempted to take her myself. Bless you for your kindness. If the animal welfare group doesn’t come through for you, perhaps the admins would okay a Winky vet fund drive.
Aww, she’s a pretty girl. And smart – she knew a good place to go when she needed one!
Those are the pictures I took for the adoption agency. I still haven’t heard from them, but it’s only been a few hours. Maybe they can help me place the kittens and my other dog in new homes, and then I’ll have the space and the time to become one of their fosterers. I can’t pay them back in money, but I can clean cages at their shelter and let a kitten or two sleep in my laundry basket!
Rescuing is holy work. Thank you.
She’s a cutie. I had a favorite aunt named Winkie who would be tickled to know her; she was a dog-lover indeed.
Beagles have a special place in my heart. The best dog my family ever had while I was growing up was a beagle. And if we lived somewhere that was good to have a dog, the wife would want a beagle (like most Thais, she’s crazy about Snoopy). Thank you for rescuing this one.
You are a fine human for helping this beagle.
Your karma bank has received a big deposit. And please accept these good vibes for Winky!
Oh, what a cute pup!
I shouldn’t open these links…
You’re a wonderful person and a great example to others.
I just called the animal welfare people, and the lady said they are sending out emails to their members tonight to see if we can get some support. She’s getting back with me when she hears from them. If I am to foster her myself, I have to put in a foster application and be approved as one of their own fosterers. They said the fact that I could foster her myself will be a huge help. If I don’t pass their inspection they will place her with another fosterer who will take care of her until they find her a home. I’d like to get to know her after all her problems are fixed and she’s herself again, but as long as she is taken care of that’s okay with me. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but I’m excited!
