That’s “good buy for the price.” Perils of tablet typing.
South Park Stick of Truth is $13 on Steam right now.
I’ve only poked a little at these, rather than played them for a long time; but since no one else answered I’ll throw in my opinion.
Dominions 3: An interesting game from the look of things; one of those high complexity, simple graphics games.
Shadowrun: A turn based tactics-style game. Light on official content from what I’ve heard, but you can download player-made content from the Workshop.
Space Engineers: I really have to get more into this. A sandbox/building game in space; so far without any “campaign mode”, you basically show up, build and explore. Hard to figure out what to do and how to do it. As of today’s update it’s effectively unlimited in size; it would take you 500+ years at maximum in-game speed to reach the edge of the playable area.
While it’s still an Early Access game, there’s a lot already there, and the dev team is still very active, updating the game every Thursday; it’s not one of those “Early Access” games that gets abandoned early on leaving a semi-functional husk of a game.
Dominions 3 - it should be noted that there is a sequel, Dominions 4, and it’s currently a daily deal. I picked it up based on the great word of mouth for the series. From what I hear it really shines in multiplayer, but the AI is decent and the world is huge so it plays better than most 4x as SP as well. Apparently it’s also got an old school beast of a manual, if you’re into that!
TTR - I’ve got the iPad version and it’s a very good adaptation of a very good board game. AI is passable for beginner/intermediate players, though it does ultimately fall off. Would definitely recommend if you’re into modern board games.
Some review or other had it that Dominions 3 is the better game.
The reviews for the version of Settlers of Catan up on Steam are pretty bad, unfortunately. Didn’t find one for my Win 7 phone when I looked, either. Funny how rare good board game conversions are.
I know, I was literally 15 minutes ago browsing away and thought say it’s Xmas, I keep thinking about replaying the Mass Effect Trilogy on the Pc, I wonder if there’s some sort of Xmas sale going on? Nope, years old DLC, still full price.
Oh and apparently you have to sign up for the Bioware social network, also I hope you don’t own Mass Effect 1/2 on Steam, because they decided to release 3 only on Origin. Possibly the saves are compatible between the Steam and Origin games but I’ve lost all interest at this point.
Lord British’s prequel to Ultima, Akalabeth, is free on GoG.com. They also have a few Ultima Games for free.
I didn’t think there was that much that I really wanted on the winter sales but there is. :o So far I got from Steam:
Game of Dwarves - It seems to be sorta Dungeon Keeper Lite
Gauntlet - update of the old arcade classic
Enemy Mind - retro 2d space shooter with the twist that you can capture any enemy ship and gain its powers
Ghostbusters - the recent release based on a 30 year old movie
Paper Sorcerer - an old school dungeon crawling RPG with a unique art style that looks like a pen and ink drawing
and
The Binding of Isaac - roguelike platformers are a bit hit or miss with me but I heard good things about it plus it was 49 cents
some things I might still pick up:
Steamworld Dig - it seems to have elements of Terraria and a Metroidvania with a cool art style
Signs of Life - Terraria clone. Might hold off since it’s early access and I would rather wait until its finished and see how it turns out
Tiny Keep - Roguelike procedurally generated escape the dungeon game. A mix between stealth and combat, with permadeath
Road Redemption - from what I can gather, racing game with at least some Road Rash elements. Has all sorts of weapons that you can beat down the other racers with, and I think some other modes too.
Evil Genius - I played this when it came out in the late 90s or early 2000s. Think Dungeon Keeper but where you play a James Bond Villian. Very strong Bond vibe with tons of humor and you can get very creative combining tons of hilarious traps for your base.
Aarklash Legacy - Old school style isometric turn based strategy/tactical RPG
Greenmangaming 24 hour sale. WINTER-SALE20-GROGRE for 20 percent more off.
Carpe Fulgar games went on sale on Steam for 66% off. Notable mainly because they haven’t been discounted this winter sale up until now.
If you’ve never played it, Recettear is a bizarrely fun mash-up of business sim and role-playing game. You play a girl who is forced to open a shop to pay off her father’s debts and balance running the store (displaying merchandise, haggling with customers, predicting demand curves) with adventuring to acquire more stuff to sell. Ever wonder what happens in RPGs when you sell those ten suits of battered splint armor to some shopkeeper? Now you’ll know!
Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition is available on Amazon for $6. This isn’t a Steam code, it’s an EA Origins code.
Most or all of the Tomb Raider games are 80% off on Steam right now.
Transistor (an excellent adventure game from the makers of Bastion) is 66% off also on Steam, which is a great price considering the game’s not that old.
Age of empires II HD edition is on sale for $4 on steam. I already own it though.
I’ve bought so many games and played so few (I ran out of hard drive space anyway) that I’m probably not buying anymore. I really only play about 10 of the 140 games I own on steam.
Decided to give Minimum a try. Apparently it’s a twitch FPS MOBA game with a crafting and resource collection element, along with supporting your team’s giant robot. Sounds like it could be a fun formula. Only an hour left on the flash sales. I don’t know if flash sales have a 12 hour grace period like the dailies have a full day, or if the price goes right back up after the flash sale ends. I think it’s the former. Anyway, if anyone else wants to give it a try, hit me up.
Thanks for that link to Crysis 3 for $4, BTW. I was wary because I tend to get bored with FPS’s rather quickly, but gawd damn is this game freakin’ awesome! All I really knew about it before was that it has very high system requirements, and I only knew that because it often appears as one of the high water marks in a lot of GPU benchmark reviews, but it runs great on my computer and looks amazing even at medium/high settings. Good lookin’ out!
After reading the reviews, I would not buy it. Apparently the creeps are just targets and don’t actually do anything worthwhile like in a real MOBA, but worse than that, when you die you lose all your weapon upgrades. Which means you’re much more likely to get killed again next time.
Edit: Has anyone played The Forest? It’s been sitting on my “Could be interesting” list for a while now, and it’s just gone down to $10.
I have had The Forest for about 6 months or so. It is still very definitely an “alpha” - it is nowhere near feature-complete.
The good news:
- devs are very actively working on it (visit survivetheforest.com for patch list and frequency)
- devs listen to feedback
- if you run in normal mode (with AI enemies), it is really, really suspenseful and creepy, at least until you get a decent shelter with walls built. Even then, it’s super-eery when you are outdoors. In other words: it really works, if this is the kind of game you want
- graphics are nice, although glitchy in places
- there is a “veganmode” where you can just explore and build without cannibals
- new features are being added with each update
The bad:
- new features are being added with each update (by which I mean to emphasize that the game is nowhere near complete)
- combat balancing is a work-in-progress
- the usual alpha bugs/glitches
- sometimes, a new version will render old saves unusable (though this has happened less-frequently in the last few updates)
I’d compare/contrast to 7 Days to Die; I don’t have it, but would be interested to see how it differs.
Bah. Almost managed to make it out of a Steam sale without spending money, but finally pulled the trigger on Overlord.
Thanks. After reading that and their website, I’m going to give it a pass for now. It is not yet a game I want to play, but it may be someday.
The Stanley Parable is still 70% off. It’s not a traditional “game”, more a hilarious bit of interactive storytelling. It’s very short, but you can and should replay through multiple branches. Not for everyone, but I thought it was very creative and different.
Roller Coaster Tycoon Triple Thrill Pack is 70% off at $2.99. THE best roller coaster/theme park game ever. Sure it’s a little dated graphically, but otherwise it still more than holds up.
I have been playing Paper Sorcerer a lot the last couple days and am about halfway through the dungeon. The graphical style is very nice, I love the hand drawn look. There aren’t a ton of items and monsters, which makes it feel a little like an RPG-lite. But the game is very fun to play, there are a lot of secrets, and the difficulty seems nicely balanced (I am playing on normal, might take a spin on hard after this). There are a ton of different pre-made characters, each with their own unique abilities and skills. You can only have 4 in your party at a time, but you can swap them out whenever you want. I haven’t played 1980’s mode yet, but I hear it is VERY hard. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you can pick it up cheap.
I was expecting one more day of new sales, but apparently we’re going to get 2 days of encore sales instead. I’ve been underwhelmed by the sales the last 2 years, but I don’t think it’s because they’re any worse - I suspect it’s just because I have 500+ games already, many of them unplayed, and so in the first few years I was a kid in a candy store, and now I’m a kid who ate a mountain of candy having people wave new candy in my face.
