I recently bought a LG BluRay player. The manual says to connect the player to my network via an RJ45/CAT5 cable. The player is not in a position to do this without a LOT of work. I have an unsued 100MB D-Link wireless router. How can I use this to connect to my FIOS network?
Is it as simple as connecting the BluRay player to the router and turning it on?
Will my FIOS router see and communicate with the D-Link?
Would I connect the player to the internet socket or to a computer socket?
My level of expertise is that Wireless is mostly MAGIC.
What is the purpose of connecting the LG device to the network, is it designed to stream content to other devices or is it just for getting firmware updates?
If one of the routers has bridging capability, you can connect two wireless routers together. Whether that will alow your blu-ray player to access the internet will depend on the specific routers you have, as well the capabilities of the blu-ray player. What you are trying to do is called “wireless bridging” and it is not an easy thing for a novice to do.
Both: it’s self-updating, and streams from Vudo, RealCinema, Netflix, shares on the local network, and a few other sources. I’ve got one of the older models; it’s actually a pretty slick little toy.
However, mine (bought a couple years ago) has wireless built-in, which would negate this entire problem. Are you sure yours doesn’t? Seems like a fairly nice feature to drop.
TimeWinder hit the nail on the head. These are the exact features that my player will have when connected to the 'net. I looked at the instructions and saw nothing about being wireless. There is a RJ45 socket in the back and the instructions say to wire it to the network there. I thought that my spare router could serve the purpose, but it sounds like I may be biting off more than I can chew. I will study a bit about the 'Bridging" mentioned and see if my equipment will do that.
Does anybody make a wireless device that plugs into the RJ45 socket instead of a USB port?
