Wireless networking problem, no IP assigned

I am having sone trouble connecting to an office wireless network. Neither my laptop nor my PDA can connect, but most other people have no trouble connecting, so I think the problem is on my end. When I try to connect, the computer sees the network and says the signal stength is excellent, but with little or no connectivity. My PDA gets as far as requesting an IP address before it fails. What could be causing this, and how could I fix it?

I’ve seen something like this before where signal strength appeared good, but plummeted as soon as I tried to do something with it. Does the same thing happen when you’re right next to the access point?

I’ve had this problem. I’ve resolved it in two ways. The first is to disable the wireless point itself, and then when it automatically resets, the PC is able to pick it up. This probably isn’t an option if you’re sharing it!

The second, but less effective way is, through the control panel, to disconnect and reconnect to the network. My WAG is that this updates the computer settings and overrides the issue.

Other than that, you need to go into the wireless settings and reassign your IP address. It needs to be one recognised by the router of course - mine uses a choice of three but dynamically assigns when I login.

I’ve tried release/renew, but to no effect. Is there a different way to reassign the IP address that might work?

Yes, you can go into the Connections settings and reset the IP to anything between 169.254.0.1 and 169.254.0.254 (I’m assuming you’re using XP). I’m not sure this will solve your issue though. BTW, make sure your subnet mask is still set at 255.255.0.0.

I can’t find any way to change the IP address under control panel and then network connections. Should I be looking somewhere else?

Properties of network connections, properties of wireless network connection, woreless networks tab, then properties of Internet Protocol TCP/IP.

Heh - what carnivorousplant said!

(I was just checking when that came through!)
