Wireless router problem

What can cause a wireless router to suddenly stop accessing the internet?

I’ve used a belkin router for a year no with no problems, connected through a cable modem. Last night, there was suddenly no wireless internet access on both my laptops. But if I plug the wire from the cable modem straight into the laptop(s), internet access is fine. So it seems like there is a problem with the router. (I also connected my laptops to the router with a wire and that didn’t work either).

Any ideas on what to look for here? The router is powered on OK and I’ve tried resetting it. Is it likely that it just stopped working after a year?

Reset it how? If you pushed the recessed little button you reset back to factory settings, with the default SSID, encryption, etc.

My Belkin did that after exactly a year but I’m no help, I just bought a new one.

I’ve had that happen a couple of times with a Belkin router. Each time I’ve been able to run the setup CD and get it working again. It was a matter of it not recognizing my ISP, but the setup CD restored everything to working order. I didn’t even need to reset my password.

Sounds like a hardware fail. If a hard reset doesn’t do anything then there’s usually not a lot you can do.

I consider Belkin to be the worst manufacturer of routers. I never buy or recommend them and all my experiences with them have almost universally been negative. Netgear and Linksys cost the same and are much better. The Netgear-N products are pretty sharp, especially considering their price.

Thks for the replies. I guess I’ll see if I can re-install the network from scratch and if that doesn’t work get a new router.
