Wireless Security Cameras

I think IMHO is the proper place to put this, as I’m looking for opinions / experience.

We live in a rural area (3/4 mile from our house to a gravel road, another 3/4 mile of gravel to the blacktop, then 10 miles to the nearest town)

Wife and I both commute (in opposite directions) 30 miles, so the home place sits empty for long stretches every day. We are intrigued by the idea of a security camera. Question is, which one provides the best value for the price?

Here is what we would like:

A wireless camera (power outlet is available), probably outdoor, but not mandatory, accessible by web, preferably would email when motion is detected.

We don’t NEED remote pan, tilt, zoom (but yes, they’d be cool!) I think one camera set in the right spot would give enough coverage, but being able to add another camera or two down the road would be nice.

We do not want to have to hook it up to a vcr or dvr. We don’t want to tape continuously, just when someone pulls into the yard. Video doesn’t have to be super high res, but we do want to be able to tell what we’re looking at.

Internet research turns up lots of possibilities, with reviews all over the board.

Anyone here have any experience and or opinions they’d like to share?

Thanks!

For a commercial customer who was experiencing stock shrinkage, I installed a GeoVision 4 camera card in a PCI slot of a spare computer he had and dedicated it to security. The software allows masking of areas to activate recording when motion is detected, and time periods can also be entered to ignore portions of the day. The card has the capability to notify via the internet, and depending on your connection speed could be remotely monitored. The card itself will accept B&W or color, day, night, IR illuminated, hardwire, or wireless cameras. The degree of resolution is a function of camera quality (read as $ spent). Those simply need the matching interface and would have to be selected based upon distances, power availability, desire for future expansion, and so forth.

You can PM or email me if you’d like to discuss this in greater depth.
