In summary, a Wisconsin teen is accused of posing as a female on Facebook, and persuading at least 31 male classmates to send him naked photos and videos of themselves. He then used the photos as blackmail in order to coerce the boys into having sex with him at various places around town. In addition to the 300 photos and videos of his classmates, police found tons of other child pornography on his computer. He is also accused of making several bomb threats against the school. Police believe there are probably many more victims who have yet to come forward.
Wow. I can’t imagine what those victims and their parents must be going through.
Not to dismiss the seriousness of this, but I wonder if sexual assault – which is one of the charges facing the boy according to the liked article – is a sustainable charge? It could be argued by the defense that the other kids consented to sex in order to save themselves from embarrassment.
Perhaps I’ve seen too many episodes of Law and Order. There was an episode where someone was blackmailed into having sex, but the blackmailer couldn’t be charged with rape.
OTOH, age of consent must figure into this somehow. The scumbag is 18 now, and apparently the victims were aged 15-17. It doesn’t saw how long ago this took place, or how old all parties were at the time.
Are there really guys who are so sensitive about images of their naked bodies that they would have unwanted gay sex to keep them from getting out? That sounds really weird to me.
I agree, but when you combine “fear of public embarrassment” with the stupidity of youth, you have teenagers who will do almost anything. Even stupider is allowing the guy to take more pics, providing even more embarrassing material evidence.
The article doesn’t specify that, though. It just says sexual acts, which could mean a whole lot of things, some of them not even involving being touched by the suspect.
I’m sure it wasn’t meant this way, but it kinda sounds to me like “since it’s gay, it’s icky and no way a guy would do that in a million years no matter what the circumstances” as opposed to “well no guy would ever NOT want to have sex with a woman, I mean come on.”
I think what he’s saying is that the “victims” here are just as much to blame as the perpetrator. I mean, seriously, blackmail is when someone says “I have a gun pointed at your daughters head. Rob this bank or she gets a bullet.” Who the fuck engages in unwanted sexual activity (gay or otherwise), whether it be some sort of touching to full-on intercourse because someone says he has revelaing photos of you? (Don’t answer this question. It’s rhetorical, and apparently the answer is at least 31 male students in Wisconsin). These guys walked right into the bear trap by sending the perpetrator nude photos of themselves in the first place.
neutron star, I apologize if that’s putting words in your mouth. That’s the way I feel about this whole situation, though.
Hey! We librarians can manipulate great! We can strong arm you into returning a late book. Or we can–we can–we–
Ok, I got nothing.
(and women, especially younger women are pressured and manipulated into sexual stuff all the time, but that’s another thread. Also, just because it happens doesn’t make it wrong and bad. I feel for these 31 boys. what a nightmare).
Although I do also think that women would have more fear of naked pictures getting out, due to society’s stigmatization of what are perceived to be the actions of a slutty girl.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to stare at naked pictures of my evidently slutty new girlfriend, who is such a complete whore that she managed to make it to 27 with a whopping two sexual partners before me.
Got the hair in a bun and the granny glasses? Got that smirk working? 'Cause I will** intentionally **reshelve some the fiction in the nonfiction just to get a little of your attention! Dewey decimal this, baby!
OK you had me percolating with lust there for a minute, eleanorigby. Or am I developing a doper crush? I don’t know. You big tease!
But ah, seriously. Teenage boys…wow we’ve had a rollercoaster ride with them in the Pit! When something like this happens, it seems like everybody can believe that they can be just_that_dumb, myself included.
It’s awful that they were manipulated. By one of their own. Who was also just_that_dumb. The gay sex thing is relevant if it was TOTALLY against the victim’s will. I don’t think I could have been enticed. But man, if I really believed I would be totally shamed in my little home town…who knows?
Oh now. You’ve the power to suspend a Library Card !!!
This is about emotional and sexual control, not gay or straight. Those boys got blackmailed. Seems it would be equally horrific were it a bunch of girls.
More like they’re so sensitive about their peers seeing it. See, if they just have sex with the guy, there’s a chance their classmates will never find out, but if they don’t, and the manipulator keeps his word, they certainly will. in retrospect, but understandable if your main concern above all else is what your classmates will think.
I guess, but you already know that you can’t trust this guy. Who’s to say that he wouldn’t blackmail you for money or more sex by using pictures of you engaged in gay sex with him? That would be a thousand times worse than plain old nudes.
