Seriously, as kids, we used snow and ice and slush as toys. The asphalted area surrounding my elementary school would be covered in an eight-inch thick crust of compacted ice and snow by the time the spring melt set in, so we’d hack “river channels” through the ice and race toy boats down them.

Or, in January, cut “snow crust” and build miniature castles.
