Wisdom teeth out 6 days and now my retainers don't fit!

I had all 4 (impacted) wisdom teeth removed last Thursday (the 11th). It has been Hell - worse than the 5 knee surgeries I’ve endured. But that’s it…
My biggest worry all along was that my wisdom teeth would push my molars forward and ruin the thousands of dollars of orthodontic work I had done when I was younger. Now just the opposite has happened. The wisdom teeth are out and *now *my teeth have started moving. They’re visibly crooked already… even though my retainers fit perfectly last week. I guess now I know why my *whole *mouth has been hurting so badly.

Anyone else? I’ve never heard of this happening.

Well, I was told my teeth might move a bit with them out. More room in there for the rest of my teeth (some of which are crooked and pushed together).

Didn’t happen to me, but it happens.

Wow… no one?

I wasn’t wearing my retainer anymore when I had my wisdom teeth out.

Isn’t 6 days a touch soon to be putting your retainer back in?

I don’t know anything about the retainer side of things, but I sure feel your pain. Years ago when I had my wisdom teeth out, I had been scheduled to have all four out at once. But tooth #3 turned out to be far, far more difficult than the dentist had expected. I swear at one point he was standing on my chest trying to pull it out, but my recollection of things can’t be trusted considering the heavy drugs I was on at the time. Anyway, he didn’t go on to #4 at that sitting because of #3. And then I get home with my bottle of percodan and … it wasn’t enough. I took my dose early, then took another as the pain started to kick in, and it wasn’t enough. I was simultaneously “flying high” and in extreme pain … If I never go through anything like that again in my entire life, it’ll be too soon.

I had three molars removed over the last two years, and every time I had to get a new night guard because the remaining teeth shifted.

I’ve been told that when a tooth is removed, the other teeth will shift. It happens more often than not, apparently.

I’ve never heard of teeth moving that fast either…but I’ve never had major extractions like that; my wisdom teeth hadn’t even erupted when they were removed.

I did have a retainer issue though…after I had porcelain veneers put on my teeth (six on the front; my teeth are horribly stained from too much fluoride as a child), my retainer didn’t fit right anymore. The orthodontist shaved the retainer down a bit, but it still didn’t feel right. I didn’t worry too much, as I was only wearing it at night by that point…but one morning, I removed the retainer to find a broken veneer under one of the tighter areas. I went back to the orthodontist, who insisted that the retainer fit just fine and refused to replace it. I ened up throwing the thing away, and I haven’t been back to the orthodontist. My dentist doesn’t think it’s a big deal now anyway.

I had my wisdom teeth remeved in March. I think I stopped biting my tongue last month.
