"Wish You Were Here" is 50 years old today

Badfinger had them beat by a year with an album of exactly the same title. It’s quite a good album, too.

Years ago in Lower Antelope Canyon I was taken by surprise when I heard someone playing “Wish You Were Here” on an acoustic guitar . There was a Navajo teenager busking in an alcove, not singing, just playing softly, not being obtrusive at all. It actually sounded pretty good in that environment. I gave him a couple of bucks.

Interestingly enough, I found a stock photo that shows exactly what it was like.

I had a Sanyo with Auto-Reverse!

For me, a lot of music can be just listened to passively in the background while I do something else. But “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” is kind of an event for me. I will put it on and lay down in a dark room just to listen to it without any distractions.

I’ve been seeing some promo for an upcoming TV show, and clearly the background music is the instrumental parts of Wish You Were Here. But the music would have nothing to do with the show, since it appears to be about violent drug gangs, so I wonder how it got there.

Ditto!
