Sigh … read the damn Constitution if you want to know what would have happened. The procedure is defined pretty clearly there. Your argument that the Supremes did “the right thing” is not only hindsight, it’s transparently based on the result, and was therefore still a perversion of the role of the courts.
While you’re reading it, try to come up with a scenario under which “nobody would know who was President”. Hint: There isn’t one.
Why not just come out and say that anything that would have made your candidate President would have been dong “the right thing”? Isn’t that what you mean?
Oh, give it a rest, Elvis. I’m just pointing out that there was unlikely to be a more satisfying result. In other words, those people who were saying that if they just had a few more days to finish the count that the ‘real’ president would be known. It’s clear now that that isn’t the case.
And thanks for the cheap shot assumption that I don’t understand what would have happened next - I’m fully aware of the constitutional procedures that would have led to a presidential selection - I’m just pointing out that that solution would have left people just as dissatisfied.
As for the silly notion that I’m only saying this because ‘my’ guy won… You fail to understand that Bush would have been elected president under any other scenario, too. Or perhaps you can give us a scenario under which Gore would have been elected had the Supreme Court not stepped in? Especially since every recount done so far has still come up with Bush as the winner?
Recounts done since the election haven’t said any such thing sam. The headlines suggested that Bush would have won anyway but the content of the articles told a quite different story. Additionally each such story has considered each anomoly in isolation when virtually every questionable call went Bush’s way.
In any case, the earlier count reported was just a cursory study. The real recount has now been buried presumably because its release at this time would be divisive.
Even if Bush would have won it remains clear that he won through technicalities and by accident. The guy who actually had the most voters come out for him both in florida and accross the nation deserved a fair recount under law.
As a Gore voter, I’m glad he’s not in office. Simply because I like the guy and I think GW has the hardest, most painful job imaginable right now - I wouldn’t wish “being President” during this time on my worst enemy.
I think GW is doing a good job. I could wish he was more articulate and aware and that he came across as more empathic (these are my perceptions only, you are free to believe GW is the most articulate, aware and empathic human being on the planet if you want), but I agree, he does have a pretty kick-ass cabinet for this.
And for those that think Democrats are less likely to react with force, Clinton didn’t waste any time bombing Sudan.
