Witness for the prosecution, butler case dismissed

The case against Diana’s butler was dropped this morning, in what is being described as one of the most extraordinary twists in British legal history. Reminds me of the movie Witness for the Prosecution.

The prosecutor told the judge that the case was brought because the butler had not told anyone what he was doing relative to Diana’s things after her death. The prosecutor told the judge this morning the Queen remembers such a conversation.
Here in the US, each side seems to do everything they can NOT to reveal information contrary to their case, but it’s apparently not so in Britain. I imagine here the Queen would have had to be called, swornin etc and legal wangleing about whether she should be called.

correct me if i am wrong, but aren’t crim. trials in britian, the crown vs …?

so by not speaking up sooner the queen just cost herself money by sending this to trial? i believe i read somewhere that the butler did tell police that he had a conversation with the queen regarding diana’s papers and stuff.

just a tad baffled on the other side of the pond.
