well, not just ebay, I went down a waffle-warren on a whim today. I found my vintage 1950s sunbeam waffle iron priced for $45 on a site called offerup, $105 on ebay and $129 on etsy
So have you ever done this, just gone window shopping for something you already have just to see what people are asking for it?
Oh sure, my coin collection, my Superman #17 from the 1940’s, various bits of art I’ve accumulated by different artists, the tool collection I inherited from my dad. The Hummel collection I inherited from my mom. Some stuff is worth a lot, others aren’t worth the effort to try to sell. But so far I’ve not sold anything yet. As you said, ‘window shopping’. ;-D
I’ve never done that before, but now I am tempted to. I guess my only “vintage” appliance is the Sunbeam Mixmaster stand mixer from circa 1975, in a very period yellow with fake wood trim. It was a hand-me-down from my parents, who got it as a wedding present. I kind of doubt anyone is selling those for big money, though.
I did used to collect old computers, though. Common stuff like Commodore 64s probably aren’t worth much, but I do have an Intel Intellec 8 from circa 1974 that could be worth something. It actually predates the Altair, but it’s not considered the first PC because it wasn’t marketed to consumers.
Of course, there is that phrase that’s oft repeated on Pawn Stars – just because someone’s asking that much for something doesn’t mean people are paying that much for it.
A copy of a college literary magazine I edited is on Amazon for $17 plus $5 delivery. I have several copies and could undercut this, but it’s also been on offer there for years. I have a paperback novel that I sometimes see offered for over $100, but that’s the asking price and not, apparently, a price at which anyone is interested in purchasing it.
We are still using the Toastmaster waffle iron that my wife brought to the marriage 30 years ago. I’m pretty sure she had it for the preceding 20 years. It works as well as it did when new and I’ll be sad if it ever conks out.
When I saw how much original Veg-O-Matics were going for on eBay, I sold the second-hand one I owned but no longer used for a $30 profit, and I found another one at a garage sale and sold it for about the same markup.
I may have mentioned that kaylasmom, in a previous life, was a chanteuse, singing primarily pop and jazz standards. In late 1980, she entered a collaborative partnership with a Los Angeles songwriter with whom, in addition to club dates, she entered some music competitions, and in one of them, won a cash award with which they decided to self-produce an album. At least two copies of the resulting album are currently on eBay (one in the US, on offer for about $35; and at least one in Japan, with an asking price of ¥1750 - ¥7400).
I learned this when I did a google search of her name.
I did this just yesterday. I have a poster from KGO radio in San Francisco. I think its cool but my wife hates it. We have collected a lot of nice art in our marriage so I think she thinks its too tacky for our collective tastes:
My dad gave it to me when I first moved out and its been either hanging on the wall or sitting in the back of a closet ever since. I was going to give it to a friend who grew up in SF but she doesnt want it. That’s when I googled its value. I’m surprised it’s as valuable as it is. I have no desire to go through whatever the process is to sell it online so I guess it’ll stay in my closet until I die.
Hehehe, I have a big blue+red Univox SUPER-FUZZ guitar pedal that I traded a chorus pedal for back in '89 or so. Worth somewhere between $600-$1000 now. Mine’s a lot rougher than the one in this listing, so probably not worth as much.
Would I sell it? Nope! Best fuzz pedal, ever. I have a few clones of it that I take with me to play shows. It’s not quite pocket sized, but it’d be easy to steal, nonetheless.
(looks up the chorus pedal I traded for the SUPER-FUZZ) Wow, even that chorus is worth $175-$300.
I’ve checked the prices of some of my old games and such. I also kept track of the price of my cheapo GPU during the graphics card shortage. The used price got up to over double what I paid new.
My wife has a letter (addressed to her) from Jim Jones (he of the People’s Temple and the Jonestown massacre), signed by him. From time to time I look to see if there is anything on eBay, but no luck so far.
Anyone who was in the American military will tell you that the National Defense Medal is kind of a joke. EVERYBODY gets one. Sort of a “participant” award. About a year ago I saw one for sale on Craig’s List for $17,000. Yes. Seventeen thousand dollars! Dude said it was a symbol of his manhood.
You can get brand new ones on eBay for 4 bucks.
