Wolfenstein: The New Order

So this popped up on Steam. I watched the trailers and it looked quite interesting. Does anyone else have thoughts before I follow my impulses and just throw money at people?

Now I wouldn’t go shooting at chests full of explosives…

Looks good, I’d buy it…

looks like an interesting lot to it …

i would buy it …

Other than the obvious concerns of single player only, old school shooter, and apparently fairly difficult, the buzz, so far as I can tell, is pretty good. The Doom beta access might be enough to draw some fans in for the pre-order.

Would be interested to know the outcome, Claptree.

Single player only?

I might have to buy it purely on principle.

I love single player and the Wolfenstein franchise. I’m buying this as soon as I can

It looks good to me, but I’m a bit wary because I wasn’t crazy about the 2009 one.

There’s no good reason to buy a single player only game on launch. There’s no multiplayer community you’re missing out on. Wait six months and you’ll get it for cheaper. Any game breaking bugs will probably be fixed by then. At least wait for reviews before buying. The previous Wolfenstein in 2009 was pretty mediocre.

There’s one pretty big one: high sales will encourage other developers to make single player games. If everyone waits until the price drops to buy it, the next game they make is going to have another awkward multiplayer module grafted on to it, draining development time and money away from the single player experience.

So it’s out. I went to install it, then stalled. 44 gigs? What the hoot? Please hold while I get a new HDD.

The review on HardOCP says it has problems with textures popping.

Bought it on Wednesday. Beat it yesterday. So, y’know, not a long game, although in fairness, I’m unemployed right now, and can spend two solid days playing the same game - took about twelve hours to get through the campaign once. There’s some replay value, in that the first level makes you choose between which of two companions to save. Near as I can tell, the only difference here is in the cutscenes, and the ability to get slightly different collectibles.

That said, I enjoyed the ever-lovin’ fuck out of this game. It’s a solid shooter, nothing exceptional to it - pretty as hell, and the destructible terrain is cool, but nothing earth shattering. Stealth elements are very light, and it’s pretty easy to go through most of the levels armed with nothing more advanced than a knife.

The real standout here, surprisingly, is the writing. “BJ” Blazkowitz is one of the most fully developed characters I’ve ever seen in a video game. He’s been fighting a losing war for nearly twenty years, and you can see it in his face. His relationship with Anya feels real, particularly after you learn some details about her life in the second half of the game. The supporting case as a whole is great, and I found myself genuinely involved in the story and invested in its outcome.

I think they could have done a bit more with the setting. Aside from a few intermittent “Hanging out at Resistance HQ” levels, you don’t get much of a sense of what society is like under global Nazi domination, other than “pretty sucky.” There’s some nice touches, particularly the three music albums you find scattered around the game, which are Germanified versions of popular '60s groups, and some overheard conversations between citizens and/or Nazi soldiers, but it would have been interesting if there’s been a level that had you, say, walking around occupied London for a bit before you started murdering Nazis by the truckload.

There’s a lot of room for a sequel, here - or more likely, a bunch of DLC. Despite having a whole Nazi-occupied world to draw from, IIRC, the only real-world locations you see are Berlin and London. The Nazis nuked Manhattan at the end of the war, and apparently it’s still a hot zone - pretty sure that’s going to show up. Also, one of the major villains is still on the table at the end of the game.

Spoilers for the end of the game:

Although the game ends with BJ apparently mortally wounded, and calling in a nuclear strike on his own location, if you sit through all the credits, at the very end, the screen turns white and you can hear the sound of an approaching helicopter. I’m guessing that somebody Giant Eagles him out of there right before the place goes up.

Overall, I recommend this game. If you’re a fan of old school shooters, it’s a must-buy. Otherwise, probably better to wait a bit for the price drop. It’s good, but not really $60 good.

Yes, this seems to mostly be a problem with Nvidia and AMD video cards. I’ve got an Nvidia GeForce 650, and it ran smooth as silk on my system, with the graphics not quite all the way up.

Apparently, it’s a driver problem, and should be resolved when AMD and Nvidia release their next driver updates.

I heard the narrative is surprisingly good.

I’m on the second run now, replaying mostly for the storylina changes and to catch any collectibles I missed. As Miller says, the characters are very good and the writing holds up well.

Here’s hoping for DLC soon. Anyone heard anything about a season pass?

So it’s “mostly a problem with cards from the two manufacturers who represent something like 80% of the video card market”? Or am I missing something here?

I think the comment means that the texture pop-in affects both brands of video card so it matters not which sort you have.

The word “some” should have been in there.

I’m finally starting the game up, I played for about 5 mins today through the opening plane ride. So far its a matter of getting used to the controls (since I just replayed Wolfenstein 2009 a couple days ago). Something about the screen feels…I dunno, odd. I’ll continue to tweak the screen to how I like it but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

I liked how they kept the small interactions with the environment, I feel it makes things a lot more immersive. Kicking open doors, tying up leaking fuel lines, or sliding seems like mechanics I’ll be using a lot
