This is the nutty lawsuit of the day story. A woman who claimed to be a Saudi Princess has put some heavy mileage on her plastic, and now says the fault lies with American Express. Clearly her mental bolts aren’t factory specified torque.
If she pulls this off, I’ll be the Shiek of YoMama, and we’ll have us a Dopefest not to be forgotten!
Could the US be any more litigious? Will I wake up in a world where my southern neighbours are suing newspapers for mental distress caused by the publishing of snarky headlines relating to frivolous lawsuits? Is there any hope for the world?
Gadfly, I am at work right now. Your post has upset me and filled me with emotional distress. Because of this emotional distress I may not be able to adequately fulfill my job duties which may lead to me getting fired. If I get fired I’m going to sue your ass!
The problem is that while we heap scorn on her, and the case will likely be tossed with the judge having sharp words for her, there will be no real consequences for her lawyer.
I agree that this woman is, well, stupid, and her lawsuit is totally bogus.
That said, if Amex gets screwed I’m not going to feel too sorry for them.
I am a po’ college student and I get roughly 3 credit card offers a week. Do these people know me from Adam? No. If they did they’d see “hmm. College student. She’s broke. If she charged up the card we give her, she couldn’t pay the bill. Let’s not offer her one.”
But no. They offer them to me anyway because they figure that I probably have someone in my life that would bail me out if I get into trouble. They really don’t care HOW I pay the bill, as long as they get their money. They’re hoping I will be dumb enough to take their card, charge it to the limit and make a tearful phone call to Aunt Betsy.
People shouldn’t get credit cards if they can’t afford them, but I think these credit card companies are being pretty irresponsible, too, when they THROW preapproved offers to people without even knowing their income or credit history.
I have always seen credit card companies in this light. They’re not giving you credit because they want to help you. They are giving you credit because they want you to fuck up so that they can charge you interest, late fees and other penalties.
I have heard of instances where as soon as a person maxed their card, the CC company just upped their limit. What is the point of having a cap on your spending power if it’s just going to be raised as you approach it?
This morning my credit card company sent me what I thought was my statement. It’s about due.
It wasn’t my statement just a letter raising my credit limit to the incredible amount of £9800 per month. A 33% increase, but then I “am a valued customer”. It’s so nice to have a company thinking of me for a change and not their profit margins.

[li]Credit card company extends nearly $1,000,000 of credit to someone whom they genuinely believe is a Saudi princess named “Millard,” and is shocked, shocked, when she can’t pay back what she’s spent.[/li][li]Credit card company dishes out credit like candy, knowing that, even if a certain percentage of customers go bankrupt or otherwise default, they’ll still make a killing on interest, late fees, etc. When a particularly egregious case does happen, release scanty details and let the media inflame the populace with “yet another frivolous lawsuit” story. Public swallows the hook with glee, and sits happily by as politicians sign “tort reform” and “bankruptcy reform” laws that whittle away their rights. Credit card companies continue the exact same behaviour, which is now even more profitable thanks to a gullible public and the politicians in their pockets.[/li][/ol]
And they totally prey on college students. They bribe the universities with a 50k “donation” or so and set up shop, handing out cards (and cool freebies) to anyone who applies for it. Then these 18 year olds, drunk with first-time freedom, go out and spend, spend, spend.
If they’re lucky (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it), Mom and Dad will be there to bail them out. Those who don’t have anyone to help when they get over their head end up graduating from college with their credit rating already ruined for the next 10 years.
They’re vultures. I’m all about personal responsibility (I will never have a credit card again, I can’t handle them), but dangling what appears to be “free money” in front of a half-grown kid, telling them “you can cut it up as soon as you get it in the mail, just apply so you can get the free fill in freebie here” is outrageous. Imagine the uproar if tobacco and alcohol companies started fishing for customers on college campuses!
College students are one thing, but when you say that the company should have known that you were a fake princess and mentally ill… well maybe you’re right, with homeland security and all, they probably should have known. But still, you’re a worthless human being. And you may rot in hell with the likes of Adolf Hitler, Saddam, and Rosanne.
Very strange. Her name is Lisa Walker and it sounds like she has been running several on-going frauds: Here and here. Here are some pics. I doubt she will have any success with her case.
Off-topic I know, but I’ve been at a student society event sponsored by Marlborough at which they were handing out free cigarettes. You had to “prove” you were already a smoker by showing them your lighter, in one of the more bizarre moves I’ve seen at a promotional event. Eyebrows were raised, but no great uproar.
