I live in an area that is big into hunting, especially deer. My Facebook feed is pretty heavy with pictures of people smiling beside of dead deer in the back of a pick up truck. Not really my thing. I find it especially unattractive when women are the hunters. I have nothing against hunting really, I am a meat eater, I just don’t find anything fun about the hunt itself. It’s just strange seeing people kneeling down grinning with a lifeless body bleeding beside of them like a trophy. I also hate camoflauge.
But back to my point. Do any of you also share my opinion of it being unattractive when women are hunters? This may be an unpopular opinion, maybe even sexist. Let me know.
I am not into hunting, nor do I think I would ever go on a hunt.
I actually just got a text this week from a female friend of mine that went hunting and she sent me a photo of herself in camo. She is extremely feminine looking, but something about the juxtaposition of the two was pretty awesome to me.
Makes no difference whether it’s a woman or a man standing by a dead carcass of a recently killed animal, it’s all hunting porn to me and I find it all equally grotesque.
I’m a woman. My dad was a hunter. I don’t hunt, and probably wouldn’t unless my life was in danger. But I do know how to shoot. I think hunting is 100% A-OK as long as the meat/hide is put to good use. Sport hunting, especially of inedible exotic creatures (like lions or tigers) churns my stomach a bit–I still think it’s OK, rationally, because people should be able to engage in whatever legal, enjoyable activities they like. But my gut feeling is still that hunting “should” be for the purpose of obtaining meat.
Anyway. Regardless of your feelings on hunting, who cares if the hunter’s a chick? For anyone who does care, it’s because they feel threatened by a capable woman who knows how to shoot and isn’t afraid of tomboyish pursuits. Strictly IMHO, naturally.
I am mainly in contact with traditional archery hunters. I find that both women and men alike who hunt also tend to be animal lovers. I have no problem with women hunters.
Hunting is not for me, but I have no problem with people who do it responsibly. I recognize that I am a giant hypocrite because I’m a dedicated carnivore who can’t bear to kill anything. I love seeing live deer/elk/bear/squirrels etc, and dead ones don’t make me squeamish (a little sad though, maybe) but I personally can’t turn Bambi into venison. Though I love venison on my plate.
FWIW, I’m female, and I see nothing wrong with women who hunt. And yes your opinion is pretty sexist - I don’t give a rat’s ass if I’m pleasing to look at while I do what I enjoy doing or what I need to do to fill my freezer. Hunting is a skill, easier now than in years gone by I admit, but it’s still a skill and those who do it well have every right to brag about it.
I’m not sure if its more or less attractive. Personally, I changed the question to: “if there was a women’s bowling team and they won the league championship, would the women in the team picture in the local paper be more or less attractive given that the picture has bowling balls & bowling pins in it?”. When I changed the question, I found that my answer was that an attractive woman is an attractive woman no matter what and that people have the right to feel proud of their accomplishments.
PS- Please, no one spoil the plot of ‘The Hunger Games’ for the OP…
Well with my sample size of one woman hunter (I’m sure I know more, but the one I mentioned before is the only one I have seen a picture and am sure of) - I can say she absolutely loves animals.
I don’t think hunting is attractive on either gender. Women hunters bother me less than men hunters…not that it’s universal by any means but I bet women hunters are less inclined to treat it as a three-day drinking trip and actually, you know, do the job.
But that’s just my admittedly know-nothing opinion.
I mean, I don’t like hunting and I know I’d be able to hunt if it meant the difference between life and death. I might throw up once or twice and probably cry while I was skinning the animal, but I’d do it - I know enough about my character to know that.
